Fear the Walking Dead series premiere tonight @ 9 (open spoilers

Agreed; we’re just not used to seeing female characters dress practically for the zombie apocalypse in the TWD verse.

Good point; any who’s immune system couldn’t handle the dormant pathogen would be dead by the time Rick woke up.

True, but I would not trust Nick to go on pharmacy runs.

This a lot of families are keeping their kids home, and more than a few have probably started to leave the city.

I doubt we’ll ever see the gangs meet up, and the only crossover character what would really make sense would be Edwin Jenner.

Apparently, on the “story sync” thing that AMC does, there were some extras. One of them was a WHO protocol document for handling the dead. So apparently the old guy did die and they were following the WHO protocol for what to do with the deceased…

Thanks’ Sam.

As someone else pointed out in the other thread once the power goes out the battery backups for the water pumps have about 24-48 hours before they die(at least that was how it went in the major us city i lived through a hurricane in).

Once that happens its over for LA, the city will become an unsurvivable deathtrap unless you have access to an aquaduct or something.

Her pets were an excellent idea, they could not bite or scratch her the most they could do is rub their faces on her.

They need a whole bunch of neutered pet walkers, hell strap backpacks on those suckers and the walkers provide free labor!

All right, already!

If we’re talking predictions, then: I predict that this first spin-off will have disappointing ratings. I base that on various interviews with the showrunners, ballyhooing “a completely different look for the new show’s walkers.” This reveals that those showrunners have failed to understand a fundamental reason for the success of the original.

We shall see…

A heroin junkie? No, they won’t. Can we end that myth, please? Sure, the junkie might fell really crappy, but unless they have some other major, major health thing going on it won’t kill them.

Now, going cold turkey off a full-blown alcohol addiction, or benzos, that can put you at risk of death.

Late to the party, since I have to get up at 0420 Mondays and don’t can’t watch the show until evening after the thread is already pages long.

So I’ll just say: Nobody leaves his car (or truck, in this case) unlocked in L.A. Especially not where there are a lot of drug users. (Also, the truck does not appear to be something even an underpaid teacher would driver there.)

I don’t feel like multi-quoting, so I’m just going to address some things people said without it.

There is no indication that the virus kills people. It has never been shown or talked about in either show. There is no way that’s the way it will be depicted. People are going to die violently, whether from zombies or living people, or they will die from other causes like natural (the old guy in the hospital), accidents, and suicide. They expect us to suspend disbelief regarding a bunch of shambling brainless things being able to multiply fast enough to overwhelm civilization.

Someone complained schools would be closed, but they were. Sure, it possibly happened slower than it would in real life, but it sort of has to be that way considering the premise of the show. It’s not World War Z. This stuff has to last a whole television season, not a couple hours.

I hope one of the family members dies, because otherwise it will be more unbelievable than usual. The junkie son would be the obvious choice, or it could be Travis’ son that he talked to on the phone. I am guessing neither Travis nor Madison (Maddie?) will die unless it’s in the season finale.

Unfortunately for those that want to get into the heart of the zombie apocalypse, judging by the first episode it seems clear that they’re going to extend the outbreak to the whole season. I don’t think we’ll really hit, “Oh, shit, this is the apocalypse and society is completely gone,” (like the first episode of TWD) until the end of the season. I’m betting some substantial number of characters will still think they have a real chance to stop the outbreak right up until the last episode. That’s basically the point of choosing the time of outbreak to start the story, isn’t it?

The ratings were off the charts for this episode, but we will see as the season progresses.

I wasn’t particularly impressed, but the same applies for TWD. I mainly watch it for the few good moments and episodes plus so I can get mad that lazy writers have such a hit on their hands. (Ok, TWD is more entertaining than a lot of shows but I still think the writing is way too lazy and leads to silly situations that make suspending disbelief an effort.)

I enjoyed it though I couldn’t give a crap less about the teen and her beau.

No, he’s a born-and-bred Kiwi.

I knew from the beginning that he’s a Maori, because i remember him from his New Zealand days, before he made it in the United States. Possibly his most memorable early role was as Uncle Bully in the amazing-but-hard-to-watch Kiwi film Once Were Warriors. He was also in Whale Rider.

He’s had an interesting and also somewhat predictable career in the US. He has benefited from the fact that he has a sort of generic brown-skinned look about him, without looking too much like any particular ethnicity, which allows him to play a variety of ethnic roles. I’ve seen him play Latinos and Middle-Easterners a bunch of times.

I certainly didn’t notice a Kiwi accent on my first watching of the show, and i’ve just gone back to my recording and don’t really hear it now that i’m listening for it. I just listened to a few of his longer scenes, including his classroom lesson on Jack London, and his accent sounds pretty much like standard TV American to me.

Andrew Lincoln doesn’t have an English accent as well.

I am glad to hear that.

On the show only!

You’re talking out your ass, Broomstick. The body becomes physically dependent on it if you do it with enough frequency. If you hit that point and you don’t ween off, your body can go into shock and die from the withdrawal. It’s happened, more than once, to people I knew personally…not friends of mine but just idiots that got addicted and then got pulled out of it through circumstance only to end up passed out and dead while trying to eat a hamburger.

Broomstick is correct. Death caused by heroin withdrawal is very rare.

From U.S. National Institutes of Health: “opioid withdrawal reactions are very uncomfortable but are not life-threatening.”

Even a treatment center that is trying to sell their recovery services says its rare: "death from heroin addiction is very unlikely, but it can occur as a result of seizures or respiratory complications. Withdrawal arising from high heroin doses can cause seizures. Having a seizure increases the risk of respiratory failure which can consequently cause death."

Nah, that’s actually a real gas station that I found on GMaps. See post #91.

I figure the cops in the area will assume (unless they get up close) that the zombies shuffling along are just junkies.

Also, is it me, or are the new zombies much faster than the old WD zombies? Do southern zombies move slower than LA zombies?

Troutman, you actually disproved him because he was saying death from heroin withdrawal is a myth. Like I said, I’ve known more than one person who has died from just quitting and not using something like methadone to get off of it. It’s messed up because you think they’re just detoxing or whatever and then they’re dead.

They haven’t been rotting away for several months.

…lame comment.
