Fight! Fight! Fight!

I am interested in stories from those of you who have had martial arts training. Specifically I am interested in stories where you were forced to use your MA training to defend youself (Successfully or otherwise).

What is your martial arts background? What were the circumstances? What did you do up to the point where you had to defend yourself, if anything? Was it a quick fight, or a knock-down-drag-out? What happened afterwards?

Here is mine:

My background is that I am a black belt in Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do, and I acheived this at age 10.

I was 14 and the Senior Patrol Leader in our Scout Troop. We were at summer camp. One of the kids in the troop, Sam, was 16 at the time and very big and muscular… much bigger and muscular than I was at 14. He was also deaf. For the most part he was pretty easy to get along with, though occasionally because of his disability there were sometimes some misunderstandings. He would sometimes get an idea in his head that was totally different than what we were trying to get across to him. This was the case in this situation, but it took a very VERY wrong turn.

Anyways, we were at summer camp. I was walking back to our campsite when I heard Sam screaming and yelling. As I got closer, I could see Sam screaming and yelling at one of our Asst. Scoutmasters. Sam was also beating the ASM with a shortclub of some sort. The ASM looked like he was ok, though it didn’t look like he could take much more of this. Without even thinking, I immediately ran inbetween the two and sent a round house kick right into Sam’s stomach. He stopped and looked right at me, saw I was ready to fight and take him down if necessary, but he just turned around and left, still screaming and yelling.

The ASM turned out to be ok and none the worse for having been beaten on. Sam ended up getting expelled from Summer Camp, as well as from our Scout Troop. I received a Commendation from the troop at the next award ceremony for my actions.

It has been the only time I have ever had to use my MA training IRL.

Well I studied Wing Tsun for a couple years but I’ve never used it except to spar with guys at parties and outside of bars.

The look of surprise on their faces when they realize that I’m kicking their asses is priceless.

I took a few years of Tae Kwon Do when I was a kid. Never got past yellow belt since my parents divorce and yadda yadda yadda.

Anyway, after the divorce my mother moved to a really shitty neighborhood where I was once of the few white folk. A gang of kids started picking on me, but I ignored them as long as possible. One time I was circled and forced to fight. All it took was one front kick to the solar plexus to get the kid to fall on his ass and the rest to leave me alone. Other than that, I’ve never had to use MA IRL.
