Film Hawkeye kudos?

Ok, having seen the Avengers film multiple times and having seen the sequel once already, I have a new found appreciation and respect for Hawkeye/Clint Barton. I was never that into him in the comics much, but I have heard of his many exploits - the fingernail takedown in the comics is a personal favorite.

Anyway, I wonder if you guys who may be more of experts than myself would say that Hawkeye was interpreted well on screen. I think he showed off some mad skills in both films, but what do you guys think?

I thought he came off horribly in the first Avengers movie, but Age of Ultron actually made me like him, which I didn’t think was possible. I’ve never been a huge fan of him in the comics, though I did like 616 Hawkeye better than Ultimate Hawkeye.

I think even though he was mind controlled in the first half of Avengers 1, his skills were still highlighted. The shot to the helicarrier that compensated for wind direction was nice. Plus the no look hits in the final battle as he scouted out other targets was pretty cool as well. For being just a guy with a bow and arrows, he did it very well.

Hawkeye is my favorite Marvel superhero, and has been since the 1960’s. The movie version is, as noted, based on the Ultimate universe, and I’m not as fond of him, and I don’t think he could sustain a movie by himself.

Does he have any actual superpowers? or is he just a Katniss wet dream?

“The city is flying…we’re fighting an army of robots…and I got a bow and arrow.”

That was probably the best “comic Hawkeye” moment in the movie.
Comic Hawkeye was more of a braggart swaskbuckler type hero. The most recent modern take is kind of a lovable loser with exceptional skills.

So movie Hawkeye never really hit either incarnation of the main Hawkeye. I guess Ultimates version is close.

Donald Sutherland had a far better interpretation of the character than Alan Alda.

Wait, what?

Daniel Day Lewis was no slouch, either.

I loved him in West Coast Avengers, and thought his happy marriage with Mockingbird was great. A long-lasting, stable, happy, mutually supporting superhero marriage.

Then Marvel decided to screw them over, and a stupidly contrived plot monster was made up to tear them apart. Sigh…

(I understand the deep dramatic need – without pain, joy would have less meaning – but I wish comics publishers wouldn’t keep doing this. Scott Free and Big Barda? Barda gets killed. Ralph and Sue Dibny? Sue dies. Peter and Mary Jane Parker? Goes bad. All we’ve got left is Reed and Sue…and that one goes bad about once every hurricane season!)

Ah, well. We still have Batman and Superman.

What?

Alfred and Aunt Harriet have an…understanding.
