Film-Poster Paintings from Ghana

Probably Not Safe for Work, so I’ll break the link:

More gory than lewd, but interesting nonetheless. I remember when Thailand used to do this very same thing, although not so horrific. They would paint the actual poster on a giant board displayed above the cinema, and it was always a hoot to see the finished product. The stars ended up looking nothing like they did in real life.

This really takes me back. I haven’t been to Ghana in… geez, like 25 years, but I remember these kinds of signs – not just for movies, but for all kinds of different things – consumer products, businesses and whatnot. It seemed to me a very collectible kind of folk art, though maybe a little tricky to get home on the airplane. I remember in particular one sign painter who had incredible technical skill, married with a certain bravura. I wish I could remember his name. It was the same as some famous Western figure – Michael Jackson, maybe?

Why is there a salmon in the poster for The Spy Who Loved Me?

Sylvester Stallone and Pauly Shore were in Evil Dead II?

Cool site.

I think you were led astray by the Red Herring… :smack:

Fascinating stuff… thank you for posting this!
