If you would read the Swedish text you would find out that this was originally an opinion piece and not a news story. Unfortunately this is not properly indicated in the translated version.
SherwoodAnderson, Are you denying there’s anti-semitism in Sweden? [yes, I know the woman lied. I posted that.]
I also posted a link about Jew hatred in my own fair country. We know there are a lot of incidents in most European countries. But Sweden isn’t one of them, huh?

No.
We should be concerned about the contents of my links.
No, I don’t deny there being any anti-semitism in Sweden, of course I don’t. I would say, though, that it is relatively marginal phenomenon at this time, and certainly no part of mainstream Swedish culture. The largest extreme-right party here didn’t get more than maybe one percent of the votes last time around. The only populist, immigrant unfriendly, political party to qualify for our parliament since WWII was New Democracy 1991-1994. And they were for lowering immigration in general, and rode on anti-muslim sentiments if anything, not anti-semitic. I do not believe that there is a substansially higher level of anti-semitism in Sweden than in the United States.
Generally I do believe that xenophobic feelings, and discrimination, against arabs and/or muslims are far more widespread and problematic in Europe these days, than they are against jews. Therefore, I think you obscure reality somewhat, if you describe Sweden (or Europe in general) as having high and/or rapidly rising levels of anti-semitism. There are actually far more swedes and europeans being “anti-muslim”, I think.
Isn’t that pretty much the case in Holland as well, what with that populist politician of yours that was shot the other year, and all?
Who, aside from being totally bugfuck and a documented liar (as in, -1 * Michael Moore ^ infinity), once famously claimed not only that the black community in the United States has largely benefited from the experience of slavery, but also that African Americans actually owe white people for the priveledge of having been enslaved.
Yes. That’s it exactly. I’m saying that there’s no anti-Semitism in Europe. So is everybody else who disagrees with you. Over anything.
Or maybe it’s that I’m saying that the cites you provided are pretty weak, and tend to undermine your case, and your strawman histronics when somebody calls them in to question make you look like an idiot.
She apparently gave her motives. She had a payment to make for her car on this day, and didn’t have the money. So, she made up this story in order to avoid having to pay.
OK…She might have been a mythomaniac, but still…
Well I do not agree. I maintain that anti-semitism remains pretty much a fringe phenomenon in Sweden. Anti-muslim sentiments on the other hand are substancial in certain parts of Sweden.
Gum, you only seem interested in answering the question: “Is there any anti-semitism in Sweden, whatsoever?”. Forgive me, but I don’t think that is a question that leads to much enlightenment. We just have to find any one neo-nazi out of a population of ca 9 million people and then we can answer “yes”.
I believe a much more relevant question would be: “Are a substancial (>5% f. ex.) part of Swedes anti-semites, or are things moving in that direction?”
I would guess (from personal experience) that the answer to that question is “no”.
Do you know of any surveys (preferably containing hard numbers) pointing in another direction?
Well like I said, no-one is denying there is any anti-semitism in Europe. That is a given.
Interesting debating points would be: Is it getting to be a big problem? Bigger than in the US? In what countries specifically? Is it at present a bigger problem than anti-muslim feelings? And so on…
I do believe that anti-muslim xenophobia is very relevant in a thread that is about a news story of an alleged gang rape of a jewish girl by 6 arab men that turns out to be falls, but only after making it’s way around the world news media, chatrooms and blogs as an example of arab savagery.
If you read my posts again you will notice that I asked you whether you thought that anti-muslim sentiments were more or less widespread than anti-semitism in your home-country, Holland.
That was the reason I brought up Pim Fortuyn since he was on his way to getting 1/5 of the dutch vote by calling Islam a “backward culture”, etc.
What do you think is the bigger problem in Holland right now: anti-semitism or anti-muslim feelings?
