This is driving my girlfriend, Tracyfish, and me insane. Well, maybe just me. We went to hear the Detroit Symphony Orchestra play Bolero on Saturday and when I heard it, I immediately thought of a song from a Final Fantasy game. I was going to start searching on my phone immediately afterwards, but was chided until she said it reminded her of Final Fantasy as well.
Now I’m looking around, trying to find the damned song online somewhere to hear it, just to put this to rest. Help?
Edited to add: My guess is that it’s the music that plays when you’re Locke, Shadow, and Cyan and you’re in the soldiers’ camp in the MagiTek armor before Kefa poisons the river.
It’s not really any special time in there. It’s all just the same thing, just played with different clusters of instruments until the last part, where it’s all the instruments.
The main theme of FF6 does sound a little like it, but that’s not currently what’s going to haunt my dreams.
Either it’s Under Martial Law (especially starting at 15s, which I linked), which I think sounds very similar…
… or I’m guessing what you’re remembering is a confluence of several of the memorable songs in the FFVI soundtrack. When I clicked on the Bolero Youtube link, I was immediately reminded so several different songs from FFVI, like part of the Zozo theme and even the overworld music from the Veldt. I can absolutely understand how you would immediately be reminded of the game, I totally got that too.
If the OP is referencing the scene in the Imperial Camp before Kefka poisons Doma, then Troops March On is the piece that plays during that scene. It uses the same leitmotif as “Under Martial Law” linked to above, and it definitely has a Bolero-ish sound to it.
I think the prevalence of that drum beat is also what’s throwing me off. I don’t think I realized how many songs on that soundtrack had that same base drum beat or a similar one.
Perhaps I remember the song from Final Fantasy 2 and not 3.
Have you played FFIX? I didn’t like the game so much (too much movie, not enough game), but I love Vamo Alla Flamenco. Note that this is the Black Mages’ version, which rocks more than the game version.
IX was very much a standard Final Fantasy, with random battles and standard “classes” of characters. In fact, it may be my favorite Final Fantasy after VI.
