Finding A Cable/Internet Provider

I’m moving this week to a new apartment in Harlem (New York, NY). I’m trying to set up my internet (preferably 10 MB+), but it seems like my only available option is Time Warner. I’ve read that Verizon is trying to enter my new zip code, but apparently not yet.

Is there any way to find out if Time Warner is my only option? They’re way overpriced, but so far my only method of shopping around seems to be calling every internet provider on the planet and having them take 20 minutes to tell me that they don’t provide service for my area.

After you arrive, talk to the neighbors

broadbandreports.com can help, but not always.

You can also, you know, go online to the providers’ websites and type in your location yourself  Faster than phone calls and sometimes you get better pricing too.

I saw that page, but it’s very unhelpful for me. The information isn’t accurate. It doesn’t list Time Warner as a provider, but instead directs users towards NXCONN, which appears to be out of business.

As for going to the vendor’s websites, they are also unhelpful. Most say that they have problems figuring out whether or not they can provide me service. A less than helpful sales person from Verizon said it had something to do with my address not showing up in their database as listed. Beats me what that means.

This is my first time shopping for internet service. It seems like this should be easier than it is…

(my one bump)
