Finding responses to one's posts

Is there any way to find out if someone has quoted your post?

Use the search function, plugging your name into the keywords field.

It won’t be specific for people quoting you, but it will list instances where they have.

Yes there is.

Go to the display modes link at the top right of the page. Switch to threaded mode. You’ll see a tree structure. Posts quoting yours will be under yours, and indented. I’ve quoted your post, so you should see it in this thread.

Correction. This won’t work if yours is the first post in the thread. All subsequent posts will be indented after the first one, whether they quote you or not. It should work for quoting later posts, though.

This post should be indented…

… this one won’t be …

… and this one will be.

Peter Morris, that principle will only work if you are limiting your search to a single thread. If the OP meant more generally, across multiple posts, you will have to search as QtM suggested.

And AFAIK, displaying a thread as you outlined won’t cover situations where a poster didn’t use the quote button, but entered the quote manually. Let’s try it:

Still, your method is easy and will handle the most common quote references.

I seem to remember that at one time, when you did a search on a name, you not only got the thread search results, but also a mini-window, showing you the context of the search find. That way you could see if the hit was from your own posts, or from a quoted one (and you’d get several hits per thread, if you were quoted often).

I think this was probably around 2002 or so, but I could be wrong. Anyone else remember this? Is this possible to have with the current board software? Is it significantly more demanding than the current search feature and therefore bad for this new server somehow?

There are times that this won’t work though! Check this post in threaded mode.
