Finland: Safe haven? Not any longer...

We Finns have always believed our country to be a very safe place, as we are relatively distant from the center of things. With the tragedic events that have happened recently over the world, we have always thought that nothing of that kind could ever happen here.

After the bomb in a shopping mall yesterday my trust of that safety is rapidly decreasing. Sure no planes and probably no international terrorists, but on our scale this is huge…

7 people are dead and over 80 injured, three of those in a very critical condition. I’m fine and none of my friends or family is hurt, but still this kind of thing is a total shock.

At this point there isn’t any information of the perpetrator(s), but I hope he/they will be caught quickly. There wasn’t any message or a warning so I think that might signal to a mentally unstable individual rather than to an organization with a purpose of some kind.

My heartfelt sympathies, therealblaze; this is truly horrific.

I harbor the romantic notion that there are still places on this Earth where such things don’t happen, and I always feel a small trauma when another place is crossed off that list. Tomorrow I will drink a toast to Finland and to the seven dead, and I willl listen to Sibelius.

I doubt that our President will make this statement, but rest assured that today we are all Finnish.

I’m so sorry, what a terrible tragedy. I hope soon the perpetrator(s) are caught.

According to the latest reports, the bomb (it was, indeed, a bomb), was planted by a 20-year-old student from the metropolitan area. It seems he is one of the dead. The police don’t yet know whether he was acting alone.

This is sad, but let’s hope it was some kind of random crazy-young-guy thing and not some sort of terrorist. Probably some guy wanted to commit suicide and decided to take a bunch of people with him.

That’s one nice thing (if ‘nice’ is the word) about having grown up in the Bronx in the 70s–I’ve always known that bad things happen to nice people in safe places, whether or not they deserve it. Human evil is everywhere and it has nothing to do with where you are, although some places might spawn more of it.

Yes, at this point it seems young man acted alone and was suffering from mental disorders. So it at least appears to be an isolated incident without anything indicating to terrorism.

Now I would like to know his motive and whether he had planned a suicide strike or did he plan to survive.

I hate it when I have to scratch off a country on the “Safe List”. England’s off, Germany’s off, hell, even Switzerland is off. And now Finland.
