Firefly, 2nd time around

Just started watching Firefly again.

First episode.
Great action. Reavers, a western-like gunfight, the crazy Ivan.

Hats, suspenders.

Good lines:
"I was just wondering what [Jayne]s job is - on the ship.
“Public relations”

"Well, we may not have parted on best o’ terms. I realize certain words were exchanged. Also, certain bullets. "

I only purchased the DVDs recently, so it’s not time for me to watch again.

Did you catch xkcd this week? xkcd: The Race: Part 1

Don’t forget about Kaylee eating the strawberry. That’s one of the highlights of the episode, for me.

Firefly holds up so well to multiple viewing, maybe it even gets better on repeat viewings. It is easily the best show that Joss created (yeah, better than Buffy, by a fair bit, I stand by that.)

Agreed on both counts, the more you watch, the better it gets.

Indeed. I’ll be in my bunk.

What a timely thread! My husband and I are currently watching the series for our third time around with two friends who haven’t seen it before. We were watching again last night and even though it was 9 on a Sunday we said to them “We can’t leave before watching Jaynestown!”

I can’t believe the show can continue to make me laugh and just be so damned enjoyable after watching it several times. That’s truly a measure of the quality. It’s just so fun!

I have to download the rock version of The Hero of Canton I have heard a bit about. Anyone heard it? I love that someone covered the song. And now, of course, it’s stuck in my head.

The hero of Canton, the man they caall…ME!

Pff. Third? Amateurs.

I load up the videos on Hulu and listen while I work. It’s gotten to where I don’t need to watch at all; my mind’s eye can fill in the video in perfect time to the audio. I never get tired of it.

“What were you in that war you fell to in? Sergeant, yeah? Sergeant Malcolm Reynolds, Balls and Bayonets Brigade. Big, tough veteran. Now you got yourself a ship and you’re a captain. Only I think you’re still a sergeant, see. Still a soldier. Man of honor in a den of thieves. Well, this is my gorram den, and I don’t like the way you look down on me. I’m above you, better than. Businessman, see? Roots in the community. You’re just a scavenger.”

One thing I noticed upon second viewing is that in the episode where Saphron has hooked up with the guy who lives in the floating apartment building, there’s a shot where she’s looking out the window, and you can see Jubal Early’s ship fly by.

Episode 2, The Train Job

What happened there in the beginning. The belly dancer gave Mal som money. Why?

High Points:

  • People getting thrown out of the windows, like in the old west. But they are animated, not made of glass.
  • When he throws the bad guy in the turbine, and start explaining to the next one.
  • Inara is super hot
  • “You know what the chain of command is? It’s a chain I go beat you with until you understand who is in ruttin’ command here.”

She’s the go-between so that Mal and the person he’s doing business with don’t have to exchange money themselves, and draw the attention of everyone in there.

I like that Jayne made up for betraying the crew in “Ariel” by giving everyone apples.

“I … didn’t feel entirely comfortable with him in charge.”

“She’s witch?”
“Yes Jayne, she’s a witch. She has had congress with The Beast.”
“She’s in Congress?!”

I thought it was the job lead that led them to Niska. Back on board the ship, Mal holds it out for Wash on the bridge.

IIRC, this was actually “What were you in that war you failed to win?” Badger was definitely twisting the knife there.
