Firefly reboot on Disney+ rumored

The OP was 4 1/2 years ago, and it has never happened. I’m thinking Disney heard the considerable feedback from fans who were turned off by their announced approach and decided the reboot wouldn’t pay off.

I loved the movie version, “Serenity”, but that was 20 years ago, and the characters I really loved are really old to resume being the type of characters they were. I think the moment is past.

All the coverage is clickbait slop peddlers like Screenrant recycling one another’s rumors. There are absolutely no concrete reasons to believe this is actually happening.

Plus, the fact that Whedon turned out to be a huge asshole has made the stuff he was closely associated with fairly radioactive. The people behind the upcoming Buffy revisit have gone out of their way to repeatedly emphasize that Whedon has zero involvement with the project, for example.

Take it to the bank. The signal has been stopped.

Nope. I think most of the cast is just not available. Joss Whedon has also become unpopular due to revelations of his behavior on various projects…though I believe I heard nothing bad about him on the Firefly set.

See, Zoe didn’t know she was pregnant at the end of Serenity, and her daughter is piloting a Firefly-class ship, with engineering being handled by the son of Kaylee … and Me! … (Hey, I can dream, can’t I?)

Go ahead, we’ll wait here for you.

I would substantially agree with this. Firefly was a gem, I wish it had more than one season in its time, but just as the actors have aged, I think some of the tropes might not travel well into the present moment.

Mal’s problem with Inara being a sex worker is a little overdone, and hearing him repeatedly snarl about WHORES is pretty jarring. That sort of stuff could be edited out, but overall it seems like that show was really better for a certain time and place.

That said, if they released a reboot, I’d binge-watch it that same day.

Thanks all. Someone I expected to be pretty up on such things posted this. Got my hopes up.

Mine, too. No good news here about it: Firefly (TV series) - Wikipedia

Or here: Serenity (2005 film) - Wikipedia

Especially because he only acted that way because he was in love with her. Belittling and humiliating women because you’re attracted to them was never cool to begin with, and in retrospect, was probably a red flag about Joss’s own attitudes towards women.

Yeah. And come to think of it, the other side of the coin was also weird, with everybody else acting like a “registered companion” was some kind of huge sophisticated deal. Kind of the whole madonna/slut thing in a nutshell, if you ask me.

More’s the pity, I think there was scope for it to grow and evolve for 2-3 more seasons at that time. But I remain uncertain that it would work as well in the present day.

I have read that one of the writers (not sure if it was Whedon) had a storyline in mind for Inara where Mal would have changed his tune. From what I remember, the episode would start with Mal and Inara arguing and he would call her a whore. The ship would have an encounter with Reavers and Inara was going to take that needle that we saw in the first episode. This gave her a case of poisoned cooch and she would end up saving the ship by letting the Reavers have their way with her. After this, Mal would dub her a “lady”. I am glad they didn’t do it, I don’t need to see her suffering like that. Also, they kind of adapted this into Serenity where River goes into the room full of Reavers and kills them all, just in the traditional fashion of violence.

Five years after I said, in this thread, that I’d like to see a reboot…I agree with this, now. I’m not sure that a revival with the same actors would work, and could recapture the original magic. And I’m even more certain that I wouldn’t want to see a true “reboot,” where a new, younger cast plays the same characters.

It now lives in the same space in my head as another of my favorite series, Pushing Daisies: brilliantly written, great cast, cancelled far too soon…but now that significant time has passed, any attempt to revive or reboot is likely to be a pale imitation of the original. At least Firefly did get the movie, which gave them a chance to put a suitable ending to that story arc.

That’s horrific in too many ways to detail. Yeah, it’s probably for the best that these writers found other work.

I’d be very interested in another story set in the same world, with hopefully a lot of the same writers. But this cast is done and their story is told.

Joss Whedon even revealed the shady past of Book in one of the comics. I’m still convinced he was an Operative, but apparently it was something else government related.

I see the criticisms of Mal and the show in general and they may be valid, but I think the show was terrific.
