Yes, only the winner pays the FAAB price
Also, you pay full freight. If you bid $76 and the next highest is $20, you pay $76, not $21.
I’ve been trying the salary cap mock drafts on yahoo, and it’s a big help to learn the mechanics/flow of an auction draft. But it seems to be all but useless in helping determine values of players. In every single one, a bunch of idiots show up, spend 85% of their salary on 2 or 3 guys, then leave and your bidding against 10 computers who all bid $2 or $3 over the computers’ projected salary and one other degenerate like yourself.
Is Jamaar Chase worth his $64 projected? Who knows, because some knob will bid $72, another knob will add on, and he’ll go for $76. Can I get David Njoku for $3? Sure, if I flood the queue with TE’s, let the puters bid against each other, and then nominate him when its just him left.
Those people have been around for decades now and I have no idea what they get out of it. Do they feel like the “won” the mock draft when they come in, throw their money around for 3 picks, and then leave? It does make the mock process less useful than it could be, and it makes me wonder what motivates people who apparently spend their days doing this.
That said, there are good resources out there that give auction values out in a similar way to people making tier lists for snake drafts. But in practice actual drafts can have kind of an ebb and a flow to them that make it pretty dynamic. Some people spend more money than they expected early on and that allows other people to control the late early rounds and mid rounds. Or people are a little scared to be the ones to blow their budget on the top players and you end up having people go cheaply at first only for everyone to realize that they’re spending too little money and then third tier players can end up going for the same price as first tier players. You have to formulate a plan as the draft goes.
If nothing else, at least the mock drafts have given me a feel for how an auction draft works. Which is far more knowledge than what I had when I signed up for this league.
I’m a little confused. I joined the league but it looks like Yahoo created two teams under my name. Obviously, I only need one.
EDIT: Nevermind. Deleting one didn’t delete both, so I’m good and in as Justin’s Baileys.
Hey Commissioner @Munch, unfortunately I’m going to have to de-commit. I’m just realizing that I won’t have time this fall to give my all to this (and I won’t be able to be at the draft, to boot). How do I leave the league?
ETA: Never mind, I figured it out. Apologies for the last-minute deletion!
This has me wondering, does pre-ranking work in auction drafts?
I don’t know if you still need an answer, but yes, you can pre-rank your max bid for auction drafts.
OK, can somebody explain what this means?
So if you weren’t going to attend the draft, you could pre-rank (or pre-value) the players you want by setting a max bid that the auto drafter will execute in your absence. Go to the league, the draft tab, and then “pre-draft values” – yahoo has a set of default ones but you can adjust them yourself so that you can still try to get the players you want even if you’re auto drafting.
Thanks for the explanation.
So if I can’t attend the draft, and enable the auto drafter, it will bid for me on each and every player up to his preset value? Is it (the auto drafter) also smart enough to correctly fill my roster at all the positions?
So I haven’t seen a yahoo auction draft in years, and they may have changed it, but at the time, yes, it would bid on your players up to your max and fill up your starter slots before it took any bench players.
But it’s not smart, it’s just following instructions. So for instance, if you pre-rated the top 3 WRs as very valuable, and they were nominated early on, it might spend $150 on the top 3 WRs and then be forced to wait for scraps for the rest of the roster. It can’t respond to the dynamic situation or create the sort of balanced roster a person would.
That makes sense. I guess I’ll need to manually draft my players!
You should, auction drafts are fun.
A while back I created a discord channel for SDMB fantasy football. We use it for voice chat during drafts and I invite anyone out there to install discord (I suppose you can run it from the website but the apps are better) and join us during the draft.
I was thinking it could also become a place for general discussion during the season, maybe live chatting during the games, but people don’t seem to use it that way. In any case, I created a text channel for this league as well as dynasty and HHM if anyone does want to use it as an informal communications platform for the leagues.
Oh, I’ll be there. Still not real sure what I’m doing, but looking forward to it.
I’ve never used discord. Might have to give it a try.
I’ll show up early to help people work out the kinks if they’re new to discord.
OK, just for grins I participated in a mock draft this afternoon, and I set my status to ‘auto draft’ for the entire draft. Here’s what I ended up with.
Pick order, Player, Cost
Pick 2. Justin Jefferson (Min - WR) - $66
Pick 11. Christian McCaffrey (SF - RB) - $65
Pick 14. Brian Thomas Jr. (Jax - WR) - $46
Pick 63. DJ Moore (Chi - WR) - $9
Pick 85. Dak Prescott (Dal - QB) - $4
Pick 114. Bhayshul Tuten (Jax - RB) - $1
Pick 126. Hunter Henry (NE - TE) - $1
Pick 138. J.J. McCarthy (Min - QB) - $1
Pick 148. Darnell Mooney (Atl - WR) - $1
Pick 156. Jaydon Blue (Dal - RB) - $1
Pick 163. Cedric Tillman (Cle - WR) - $1
Pick 169. Theo Johnson (NYG - TE) - $1
Pick 173. Nick Chubb (Hou - RB) - $1
Pick 177. Seattle (Sea - DEF) - $1
Pick 180. Tyler Bass (Buf - K) - $1
As one can see, I got two high-value players early in Jefferson and Mccaffrey, but at a great cost. Brian Thomas was a good get, but after that, not a great look down the roster. After I got Thomas, a lot of players were drafted before I got DJ Moore.
Tuten is a rookie and McCarthy is a second-year guy. But he might be better than Dak Prescott.
This is probably a strategy I won’t use tomorrow.
I’m late to the party and haven’t read the thread. If there’s openings and the draft hasn’t happened, I’d be interested.
Draft is tomorrow night (auction.) Join the fun if that works for you.
