Well, I suppose the title is pretty self-explanatory. I’m leaving the house in a little while, off to Chinatown for a blind date. We’ve spoken on the phone a few times, and he seems really nice, smart, and has an appropriately quirky background and esoteric interests. I hope it goes better than my last blind date did…well, I suppose he couldn’t possibly smell worse!
I hate dating. It’s so random and awkward. I much preferred my old method, which was hanging out with someone for a year and a half before romance blossomed. But no single, straight, non-psychotic guys (at least ones who bathe and who show any romantic interest in me) seem to cross my path these days. So it’s off to my date. I still can’t make up my mind: drive, or take the train? Flat sandals, or platforms? I suppose all these considerations are pretty minor, if you think about it.
Probably the platforms: I’m 5’1" and he’s 6’3"… As for the rest, que sera, sera…
Hey Eva, have fun. If you’re real lucky, it will go as well as my last first date did, which was in the fall of 1983, with the woman with whom I celebrated my 17th wedding anniversary six weeks ago.
For what it’s worth, I’d say take the train, wear the sandals, and don’t sweat the height thing!
Decided on driving, platforms. Should have done the train; took a wrong turn and ended up on 35th St. and had to turn around and go the other way. (I never drive to Chinatown and the darn diagonal streets always screw me up.)
Platforms, and all other appearance-related decisions, were completely irrelevant, as he showed up in shorts and a T-shirt. Does nobody believe in at least wearing long pants for a first date anymore? Well, unlike my last date, at least he had bathed recently and his clothing was clean.
Very yummy Chinese restaurant (Emperor’s Choice, for you ChiDoper folks). They specialize in seafood, and had all sorts of things on the menu I’ve never seen anywhere else. He’s been going there with his family for years; all the staff knew him by sight. I let him pick dinner, which I never do, but which turned out to be a good move, as I was completely overwhelmed by the menu. Salt and pepper shrimp was extremely yummy, as were fresh scallops on the half-shell with ginger and green onion. I’ll definitely go back there, with a large party to try more stuff.
Very nice guy, but I’m not sure I’m attracted to him that way. I almost felt more like we were related or something. We had a perfectly pleasant time and I felt comfortable with him, and would probably give it another try, but I have a hunch I’m never going to develop the hots for him. All in all, a 7 out of 10. twickster, if you’re willing to commute, feel free to give it a shot.
Ah well, you had a pleasant evening, discovered a good restaurant, and at least he’d bathed. Let me get back to you on the commute – I’m not sure I’ve exhausted every possible option here.
