First look at the new Dr Who.

Doc 10ant look promising. After 5 minutes in the role he already seems an improvement on his predeccessor. In fact I’d say that this is the best first 5 minutes of ANY Doctor. On this brief view he seems to combine the insanity of Tom Baker with the youthful enthusiasm of Peter Davison. If he manages to add some traits that are uniquely his own, then its just possible that he will be the best Doctor ever.

Yeah he looks like he’ll do nicely after the top notch job Christopher Eccleston did at re-introducing the Doctor after such a long time away.

I really like what they did in the last season. For a kids show, and let’s not forget that’s what it is, they really pushed the boundaries in some episodes. Actual moments of true suspense verging on horror, nods to bi-sexuality and lots of humour.

Other Who news is that the new look Cybermen have been revealed. I don’t like what the did around the tops of the legs but hopefully they’ll manage to do what they did with the Daleks and make them really threatening.

(one bump) Any other comments?

I watched CiN, so i saw the special. I think he’ll be pretty good, he seems pleasantly mad, anyway. Not sure I can look at him the same after Harry Potter and GoF, though.

Looks promising indeed. Now I just need the Eccleston series to come out on DVD so I can watch them all – they’re darned hard to find here in the States.

Anyone know whether the new series will be broadcast on the CBC in Canada like the Eccleston ones were? The CBC’s site does not seem to say.

BBC Worldwide Americas has a Valentine’s gift just for you: NTSC Region 1 boxed set for February 2006. Canada only, but I’m sure you can find someone to ship internationally.

Can someone clarify please? I used to be a fan when I was younger. How long was the show off the air? When did it come back? I thought it was gone for good.

In a nutshell:

Cancelled (or technically, put on hiatus) in 1989. The last serial of the Original Series was “Survival” (how ironic).

A telemovie was made in 1996, in the hope of spinning it off into a regular series. But the movie wasn’t all that good, and needless to say, no series.

The new, current series was announced in late 2003. The producer/writer is Russell Davies, the 9th Doctor Christopher Eccleston, and the Companion, Billy Piper. Eccleston was very good, but sadly only chose to stay with the program for a single season. David Tennant is the current Doctor. The program has drawn consistently strong ratings and very positive critical appraisal as well. Sarah Jane Smith and K-9 are due to appear in an episode this season.

Sweet! Thanks!
