First Sporting Event

Next week, I will take my daughter to see a double-header of women’s soccer, USA vs Japan preceded by China vs Germany. Its 100 miles north in Columbus. This was inspired by her recent innocent remark, “Daddy, can girls play soccer, too?” This sounds a bit strange, but take into account that most of her life has been spent outside of the United States, where one hardly ever sees women’s sports. Anyway, she is very excited about this.

I recall my first sporting event, I was about 7 years old, and my father managed to find some tickets to the season closing Redskins/Browns game at RFK stadium. It was the first time in many years that the Redskins had qualified for the playoffs, Sonny Jurgensen was the QB, and, IIRC, the Browns won.

But it was still great. I remember the atmosphere, where we sat, that it was cold but not that cold, we were so high up that it was hard for a young boy to concentrate on the game. This is a big part of the reason that I am so into watching NFL games now. It still takes me back to one of the few times in my childhood when it was just me and my dad. I have two brothers and two sisters so one on one time didn’t happen very often.

So what’s your Sports memory?

Aw, that’s nice. Making a memory with your daughter…

I don’t have a lot of sporting event memories beyond going to HS football games, but I’ve been two to Buccaneers games and two or three Devil Rays games and I just love the charge that comes from being there “live”. However, I also like enjoying the game from the comfort of my couch…

The Grand National Rodeo at the Cow Palace (the “Pow Callous”, as I like to call it) in San Francisco, when I was eight yeares old.

Or maybe it was seeing the SF Giants with McCovey and Mays playing against the Philadelphia Phillies. They rolled the ball across the plate rather than let either of them get some wood on the ball. Of course, I was outraged to the max.
