So the series has begun broadcasting in my country. I’ve DVRed the first few eps, and I neee to know if it’s worth getting into. All I know about it is that it started with a bang and ended with a whimper, it stars the more annoying Feinnes brotha, and that it was cancelled before its time. I love serial SF, but I hate a lack of resolution.
I enjoyed it, but was disappointed by the ending, which resolved almost nothing and left many more questions. If they were to continue the series, I would watch it, but I gather they do not intend to. Of course, I don’t find Joseph Fiennes annoying, which helped.
I read the book by Robert Sawyer, and was looking forward to see how they would adapt it to television. I watched the first couple of episodes, and just got bored when I saw that only the basic premise was used, and it was being turned into an action/procedural show. Your miles may vary, but it didn’t hold my interest.
I had high hopes for it, started it, and quickly lost interest. The characters are just dumb in the extreme, and the storyline was boring. I dropped in a few times during the season, and I guess it looked like they’d added more “mysteries”, but it still didn’t seem very interesting. I watched the last episode, and it was disappointing. I don’t think it’s the producers fault, they didn’t know the series had been cancelled when they made it. But as cmkeller and Oy! said, it does not wrap up or resolve or answer ANYTHING, so you’re just left hanging. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth starting.
I was really excited to dive into the show and the first few episodes were pretty strong. A few of the sci fi concepts and the sociopolitical aspect had massive potential. Largely that potential was wasted though you could blame the need to stretch the story across multiple seasons as a excuse. I was really intrigued by the idea of the blue hands but that entire arc was mostly let to whither.
All in all the show isn’t Firefly. I liked it and DVRed the entire season and I don’t regret watching it, but I’m not sure I’d recommended it to someone who would get deep into the mythos. If you just want a simple throw away sci fi drama to occupy some dull summer evenings then go ahead, it’s better than reality TV and most sitcoms.
I stayed with the series and had hopes that there would be a good payoff at the end – such as tying up plot elements in ingenious ways or at all. Well, it was quite disappointing at the end. As to the ending …
I got the impression that it was a setup for a second season which will never come.
As for watching it or not, I wouldn’t bother. It was alright, but not some “wow teh awesomes” show anyone will still be talking about years from now they way they still talk about Firefly, for instance.
If it was continuing or had an actual ending, I might suggest giving it a shot, but as is, not really any point.
I think it got better as the season progressed, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The final episode showed that the producers/writers didn’t really think about implications of the timey-wimey stuff all that much.
