It squicks me out. It embarrasses me for you. I know you can’t understand, but to me, it would be like praying around the fire for the King of the Smores.
It’s very unconfortable. Liken it yourself to praying for Lucifer to come smite your Lord. That would squick you out right? It’s hard to explain, but it makes me that unconfortable.
I mean, goosebumps kind of uncomfy. I must seem a heathen to you, but I am literally that disturbed when somebody prays around me.
Well, OK, but for me the nearest I can liken it to is that excellent short story The Blast of the Book, in which Father Brown picks up the cursed book without a moment’s hesitation or odd feeling. “You see, I am not superstitious.”
[mode=evangelical zealot]You see, your uncomfortable feelings are clear evidence that Satan doesn’t want you saved! [/mode]
If someone asked me to do that, it wouldn’t squick me out - I just wouldn’t do it. If it was someone else doing it (which is analogous to what we’re talking about), um, I wouldn’t really have anything to say on the matter.
Well, I just hope that now the SDMB atheist wars can go back to being gentlemanly 19th-c battles with rules of engagement and all that again. New Testament Greek and Bishop Berkeley and Bertrand Russell and Kierkegaard are much more interesting to me than “cunt.”
tom, I was kidding. Often my humor is so rarified as to be discernable only by me.
At any rate, I had hoped that you would have remembered the many times I have defended you in threads like this, and recognized my jocularity, poor as it was.
I did not mean any of those things I said, with the possible exception of ‘unidexter.’
My point is, and you know it, I am not comfortable with religious people praying around me. Strangers across the net praying doesn’t bother me as such, but as I said, when they post they are praying for me, it “irks” me. I can’t make it any clearer than that.
“irk” can be anything from mild irritation to full flaming bullshit, which I am not inclined to do now. I simply stated my point, and rather politely I think for the Pit.
Way way back when, it was noted that we normally don’t allow threads whose purpose is to slam former posters who cannot defend themselves. So, this thread was being left open if it was focused on the administrative process. This thread has a bit of that, but also seems to be a believer-vs-non-believer thread (which belongs in GD forum) and some other random miscellany.
I think it’s gone on long enough. Since I’m the one who pulled the plug on badchad, I’m now pulling the plug on this one. (If the forum moderators disagree with me, they can certainly overrule me, this aint my turf.)
