I honestly don’t know if this was for or against DeSantis.
A bit of a Rorschach for sure. Which is a strong demonstration of just how polarized we’ve become that the same idea can be super-repellent or super-attractive to different people living near one another.
I’d bet far more people, even many (most?) anti-abortionists are in favor of those exceptions. As such I think the net impact of the billboard will be negative for DeSantis. And was therefore probably paid for by his opponents. Good thing that.
I can certainly imagine there are towns and counties where the opposite result holds. But on an all-state basis, if every Floridian saw the billboard, the net result would be anti-DeSantis.
I’ve no doubt that around here where I live (coastal Palm Beach County) it’s a net negative for him. A strong net negative.
Not knowing where roughly in FL you are, I can’t say anything about the local reaction.
It was on the Florida Turnpike, probably in Pompano Beach.
I suspect against, as I think Republicans would make things more positive and try to gloss over that part more. They know that not even all Republicans agree with that part. Democrats are more likely to just say it factually, trying not to alienate Republicans but also not say they are for abortion.
Probably. There have been many FL highway billboards in the last few months saying in effect “DeSantis is an extremist.” Which extremism excites the heck out of other extremists and pisses off everybody else.
The $10trillion question for our nation is which group is larger: extremists or non-? We’ll all find out all too soon.
I think it is a net benefit to Crist.
For the people who are opposed to all things liberal they will never, ever vote for Crist.
Likewise with the flipside that will never, ever, vote for DeSantis.
This is aimed at people on the fence and it is more likely to tip them to Dems than Reps.
All that said, 538 has DeSantis as the easy win. Those billboards will not help much.
Rubio also looks likely to coast to a victory.
ISTM Florida is becoming Libertarian Central.
I’d say it’s largely aimed at people who may not be motivated enough to go out and vote, to let them know what the stakes are in this election.
Maybe that too.
It is not enough. Florida is a lost cause I think.
To win the governorship, I’ll agree. But turning out to show how much opposition there is has its own merit. Also, getting people into the voting booth to vote against DeSantis also gets them into the booth to vote for all the other races, and depending on location, that could make a difference.
Cuba better dodge out of the way.
The fact that Crist is a Republican who decided to wear D colors a few years ago doesn’t help. Here in FL our choice for Governor is between a 2010s-style Republican and a 2020s-style Republican. There’s no real Democrat in the race.
I think we’ll see a lot more of this in the future if/when the Ds ever do any good at the polls again. There are three ways to ensure your side always gets elected: cheat by disenfranching hostile voters, cheat by faking the vote count, or cheat by running your candidates in both parties.
