Florida is Officially Fucked

Yeah, a lot of people are under the misapprehension that the Police are duty bound to take a bullet for them. Nope.

"The US Supreme Court has made it clear that law enforcement agencies are not required to provide protection to the citizens who are forced to pay the police for their “services.”

And, earlier in 2005, "WASHINGTON, June 27 - The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation.

The decision, with an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia and dissents from Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, overturned a ruling by a federal appeals court in Colorado. The appeals court had permitted a lawsuit to proceed against a Colorado town, Castle Rock, for the failure of the police to respond to a woman’s pleas for help after her estranged husband violated a protective order by kidnapping their three young daughters, whom he eventually killed."

What’s a “vaseline biker”? Only references I can find are to a certain rude joke, but this seems like a different usage.

No, you see, in Florida everyone’s expected to put the bullet into the [certain types of] folks who step in front of you, first.

Her hair was vaselined back. She wore leather biker gear.

Feds are not happy with DeSantis & Co. threatening their public schools’ federal funds.

In fairness, a lot of fucked-up shit happens in Castle Rock.

I really wish you wouldn’t pick up hitchhikers. I know you’re just trying to be nice but it just isn’t safe.

Meanwhile DeSantis, has instituted a gag order against University of Florida Faculty testifying against his voter suppression efforts.

Cancel culture anyone?

More than that, isn’t that a violation of the separation of powers?

Yeah, I don’t see how he has the authority to order that. If the school officials are subpoenaed that’s a court order to appear. Republicans of late appear to think they can ignore such summons if they wish but courts in general think otherwise.

The article doesn’t actually say they were subpoenaed. The professors are fighting the gag order, so that means they want to testify. So they may be doing so without a subpoena.

Perhaps, in light of the gag order, the court or the plaintiffs could officially subpoena them as their next step. Perhaps that would then override the gag order?

I’m looking forward to the hand-wringing letters from people like Steven Pinker.

Nitpicking my own post, the order didn’t actually come from DeSantis, it was from the University of Florida administration. But given that DeSantis controls UF’s funding and other than to help him there was no reason for the order, its pretty clear that there was pressure from DeSantis behind the scenes.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised, or it may just be university administrators proactively trying to keep him happy.

I read somewhere (I’ll try to find the cite) that the big push to shut the profs up is coming from a BMOC on the Board of Regents who is a major financial contributor to DeathSantis and his evil.

I’m not seeing much in the way of deterrence when it comes to ignoring subpoenas. That, in my opinion, is a real problem.

Hey, it’s been awhile since we’ve talked about DeSantis in this thread.

How about this video in which he ridiculed teenagers for wearing masks at an event, saying “we need to stop with this COVID theater; this is ridiculous”? A couple of them took off their masks, but a few of them didn’t.

We knew this was coming, but I’m still fucking sick about it:

Better not speak out against oppression in Florida, either.

Party of personal freedom. Ah-huh.
