FloriDopers: Heads up for TS Fay

This link updates every six hours

Well, it’s been a few years, but I suppose it’s time we got hit again with a Mother Nature’s power. Hopefully this one will remain a tropical storm and we’ll just get some much needed rain.

I told my boss about it on Friday, but she pishposhed that it wouldn’t amount to anything. I guess we’ll have to plan on working a bit ahead on some stuff just in case we get an unscheduled day off in the middle of the week.

Break out the shot glasses and hard liquor of your choice and get ready for breathless, up-to-the-minute, picture-within-picture, round-the-clock storm coverage on the local TV affiliate of your choice! Kudoes to the first Doper who documents some talking head saying “hunker down” or the hapless reporter standing out in the wind and rain pointing to the palm trees waving in the wind.

Of course, everyone, stay safe, and make sure you have lots of ice.

Lovely. The 8/16 11am update has it more on an easterly course, which would bring it right up through the middle of the state.

Well, guess I can put off washing my car today!

It doesn’t look like there’s enough time for it to develop into a hurricane…it’s going to lose strength over Cuba, and then bang into us.

My boss just called…I will probably have to go into work tomorrow to get ahead on some work. She’s waiting on word from her boss.

Yay, rain!

Looks like the entire state of Florida might get some weather, and considering the fact that we are in a State of Emergency I suppose we should sit up and pay attention.
Jacksonville is overdue for a heavy-duty storm.
My younger son up at FSU is ready for his first hurricane party.

I do have to go into work tomorrow. Hopefully my boss and I can bang out what we need to in short order.

We have had plenty of afternoon thunderstorms lately-I noted winds which were at least 50 MPH the other day as yet another squall rolled in. I doubt the tropical storm will be much different from this week just past.

Thanks to Marley23 from bringing this thread back from time-out…I thought I was going nuts!

I had to go into work for about five hours today to get us ahead on our work. I’m thinking we won’t be in on Tuesday, but senior management is thinking it’s just going to be a thunderstorm. I guess it all depends on how quickly it passes over Cuba and if can reorganize before it hits the west coast of Florida.

I filled up my gas tank, and other than that, I think we’re about ready.

Maybe it was just where I was working when we got hit with the hurricanes/tropical storms the last few years, but I almost shocked when they expected me to go into work. (I didn’t work the phone lines and I was basically Admin). On the east coast, they wanted us to come in for Charley and Frances, and there was a skeletal crew whenever the 3rd one came through. (I think it hit as a Cat2/3) However, we were expected back at work once the roads were clear the next day - I’m like what?! There’s trees down, I have no phone/power/water at my house - oh, but we have AC and water at work! (Damn backup generator they just installed! Not like anything got done, cause the power/phones/internet were unstable and everyone just wanted to BS) Hubby was home from work, but I went in just so I didn’t have to use up vacation days.

We have a Weds morning flight to see family back north, I just hope the flight is on a reasonable schedule. But really, I was surprised how quickly life gets back to normal after these storms.

Cool. Two other Jacksonville-ians in this thread. Let’s hope that JAXPORT ties its cranes down this time and doesn’t depend on just the brakes! :stuck_out_tongue:

It appears that Fay will cross right over Macclenny. We are in the northeast corner of Jax so we can expect rain, wind and more rain. Oh, and the power will go out at the first gust of wind (sorry, JEA).

My husband is visiting his mother until next Sunday so I get to ride out the storm with the dogs and horses. I don’t have a clue how to hook up our generator (we got that after the Charlie-Frances-Jeanne year) but a friend is going to come by to show me. Tomorrow, the ranch hand and I will put away all the miscellaneous stuff that could blow around and fill all the gas cans. I’ll probably pick up some more bottled water and hay but, other than that, we should be okay.

We measured a wind gust of 43 mph in Wednesday’s storm and I’m expecting Fay to be similar to that, just much longer.

Don’t forget to paint your name & phone number on your horses in case the fences go down.

ivylass, I thought of you this morning when I saw the projected path for the storm. Central Florida always seems to get hit no matter which way the storm rolls in.

We’re under Tropical Storm watch in West Palm Beach. According to The Weather Channel, Miami-Dade and Broward counties have cancelled school tomorrow. I don’t think we’ll get hit too badly on this coast, but I gassed up my car and bought bottled water just in case. I’d rather be prepared and not need it than have to scramble for supplies after the storm.

I called my brother in Tampa about two hours ago. He didn’t even know there was a storm coming! He said he’s not getting gas in advance, because “there’s a law that all gas stations have to have generators.” I don’t think he has cash or bottled water, either. Unfortunately he’s one of those people who has to learn everything the hard way.

All gas stations may have to have generators, but it may not be safe for him to drive out to the gas station! :smack: Plus the price may spike as demand goes up.

Schools in Central Florida are open tomorrow, but will probably close Tuesday. It’s supposed to hit as a Cat 1.

Last update put us outside the cone. Palm Beach schools are still open tomorrow and I can’t understand why they would close Tuesday unless the storm drastically changes course.

I heard on the radio that one weather forecaster is thinking it’s going to hit further south and head east, toward Melbourne, which would bypass central Florida.

I’m one of those people who hate to see planning go to waste. We’re working ahead, getting ready for the storm, and although I don’t want to see anyone hurt or property damaged, I’d like to see a little of the storm, you know? I mean, we got ready for it!!

I see Local6 thinks it’s going to hit Miami; NBC reported (I missed the source) Fay would hit as a Cat2…so much conflicting info.

I’ll just keep refreshing the Wunderground page at 8a, 11a, 2p, 5p, 8p… Of course now it’s coming down to make decisions about changing flights we have scheduled for Weds morning out of Orlando. How much wind/rain will there be trying to get there, let alone for a plane to take off.

Seriously, last time we travel in hurricane season - and we joked ‘hey, it’d be funny if there was a hurricane when we tried to leave.’

We moved to Florida in '05, the same week as Wilma.
I saw some of the aftermath of Rita, but that’s the extent of my hurricane experience. So far.

To all you FL Dopers, stay safe and take care!

Ladybug, the stations may have generators but it won’t do any good once they are out of gas. Your brother may end up in a line or out of luck.
