folklore of the smdb

Esprix? cite?

Oh, andygirl NEVER makes sense. It’s one of her most charming traits.

She is the Mistress of the Bewildering Riposte and the Piquant Non Sequitur.

She’s a folk heroine around here!

<giggles>

Carry on!

I believe that I’m the oldest female poster - turn 59 next month.

Is Carl still posting? He’s older than me.

If you weren’t around when Wally was here and you haven’t yet checked out the memorial page, do it now. He was a truly nice person and had a wickedly wonderful sense of humor.

Rasa, that was not funny.

Esprix

agless6 is now in his 7th decade. Everyone says hi to Opal because she lives in a cave and it gets very lonely there.

We here at the SDMB believe Serl. . . . would grow Anthrax on his farm and mail it to all the old, fat, ugly black women long before recent events.
Gerbil nuts are the new healthfood snack from General Mills.

And Rasa, that was funny.

By 'oldest, I mean the one who’s been around on the board the longest.
Sorry about the confusion.

If it is, please just ignore me.

But can anyone tell me what happened to Satan? I was lurking around the time the whole breakup with Heatherlee happened, and went away for awhile (last I remember he was celebrating his engagement to DrainBead.) I come back and he’s been banned. People still mention him occasionally, and it’s just got my curiosity aroused. What did he finally do that was so bad he got banned?

I tried doing a search but I’m not really sure what I’m looking for…Satan is in tons of threads.

If anyone could provide a link to answer this I would greatly appreciate it.

Mark Serlin was reputed to be rude, obnoxious, and loved to bait newbies. I fell for one of his pranks when I first joined. I was accused of being a sockpuppet for it, even. One or two people here still carry a grudge the size of Texas towards him for his antics.

A sockpuppet, BTW, as I understand it is a phony ID set up by a person so that they can either argue with themselves, or say “My, my, what an intelligent post you made”.

And the thread the got me to sign up was Scylla’s “War Of The Rodents”, in which he described his efforts to eradicate a gopher infestation on his back 40. Sadly, the thread is no longer available, due to the Server Purge a couple of months ago. People suggested lots of things to get rid of 'em. High-powered rifles, truck-mounted vacuums, poison gas attacks, trained dogs, were all suggested. About the only thing they didn’t suggest was to sic Serlin on 'em. Heck, even we have standards.

Pssst!

Pcubed, thank you!!! I was afraid that one was gone forever to the bit bucket!

Infinitii, go look at this one. It’s one of the classics. Oh, Scylla changed his name, and the thread is about groundhogs, not gophers. I was close - it’s one of them G-critters. You know, gazelle, gnu, gerbil… they’re in all the biology books in the G family.

:Ralf heads off to re-read about the Monster Mutant Groundhogs again:

Ralfcoder, are you sure you aren’t referring to the Evil Nazi Groundhogs thread?

Fooey. Beat me by long minutes!

For this board, as far as I can tell the regular member (non admin, moderator, or staff) with the lowest userid and earliest registration date who still posts seems to be CatBiker (userid#33, registered 3/11/99). Oddly enough, Cecil Adams is userid#31, and registered 3/10/99.

However, there have been much earlier incarnations of the Straight Dope Message Board than this one.

'Sallright, Ahunter3. Thank you, too! Consider yourself as a Backup Fighter of Ignorance.

Well, let’s see…we need a starting reference point…

OpalCat, she of the obligatory “hi” on the 3rd item of every list, still posts actively and often to this board, and was on the AOL version of the Straight Dope Message Board way back when. You gotta predate Opal to be the Offical Oldest Poster.

There were some folks on the AOL SDMB who were members before Opal’s time, so who, if anyone, is a poster here who was on the AOL board before Opal? Let’s see…

Roshnee ( or Roshni) = definitely predated OpalCat, as Opal herself says, and was, I think, once of the very first members to post on the AOL SDMB. As far as existing on THIS board: No one has posted here as “Roshnee”. There was ONE post by “Roshni Kasumo” in October of 1999, and ONE post by “Roshni” in Sept of 1999 so if Roshni and/or Roshni Kasumo is the Roshnee of old, and that counts, she’s possibly the oldest. But that’s an awfully long time to be dormant, so I suppose she doesn’t count.

Ranger Jeff = hasn’t posted here in a long time, although he put in an appearance in the SDMB Nostalgia thread, and someone later on in that thread said he changed his SN to “Ranger”, although it still comes up as Ranger Jeff, so I have my doubts. Don’t know if he preceded Opal.

StoryTyler = may or may not have preceded Opal.

Is Libby around? She may have preceded Opal on the AOL board. I never see her posts here though.

George (HpstrDufus)? Did he ever post here?

Melis (Kiltgrrl) = pretty sure she preceded Opal, but never posted here.

CK Dexter Haven (originally CDDextHavn) = did he precede Opal?

Bermuda999 = another person from way back when on AOL.
and there’s TubaDiva, who may have been on AOL since before Opal also. She could be the oldest.

See Ed Zotti’s explanation.

No one’s mentioned Guy Stuff? You kids now a days, no sense of history.

Also the origin of MPSIMS: The Name. Many years ago, back on the old AOL Straight Dope forum, someone posted a thread called “Titanic Wallpaper” which linked to a website whose sole content was, you guessed it, the Titanic’s wallpaper patterns. An esoteric interest, but that’s the internet for you. Someone else responded to this post by suggesting the thread should be renamed “Mundane Pointless Stuff I Must Share.” From there, other people started posting the boring minutae of their personal lives and the thread evolved into the place to post personal messages. When the AOL forum shut down and was replaced by this website, the name went with it.

…who is Mister Ruda Duda?
::grinning, ducking, and running::

I recommend this thread, “Pyrrho12’s Parade of Board Lunatics” as a good primer to the odder side of the SDMB.
