folklore of the smdb

ok, i’m not sure where this should go, but mpsims seems like the most likely suspect. and actually, i’m not really sure the word folklore is what i’m looking for, any help on this would be appreciated.

what i want to start with this thread is sort of a collection of the most interesting aspects of the smdb. possibly stuff like who among regulars will be most likely to respond to a specific sort of question, who are in the running for the most posts, stuff like that. also, things that are often alluded to but not often explained. i know i would like to know more about this serlin (notreallyatroll) guy.

if someone can define this better or something, that would be helpful. also, if a thread like this has been started, a link to that would suffice.

I also wanted to know about Serlin, but I was warned never to mention that name. From the general tone of posts about him, I gleaned that it was a sensitive topic.

What sort of allusions did you have in mind, infinitii? I think this thread is a good idea, but I just can’t think of many. I think the term “sock puppet” has the potential to baffle a new poster who has never seen it used before.

I would just like to state that I am the most successful sock-master in SDMB history as I am the mastermind behind a full 57% of the mods.

My Uncle Beer puppet has a mini-can of Heinekin. It’s very adorable.

The gist of the Serlin story is that he ticked everyone off with a series of mysoginistic posts/threads about exactly how he required his women to look, act, dress, do their hair, smell, etc.

I don’t recall what thread specifically led to the banning, but I believe he also tried to reregister at least once after being banned.

Someone else can fill in more details if they want.

Did you check the Teeming Millions home page? Lots of old SDMB lore there!

Well, I remember one piece o’ folklore in particular, where Manservant Hecubus started leaving bits of clothing around the boards. You’d open up the newest “Christians are pigs!” thread in Great Debates and there’d be Manservant, leavning his underwear 2/3 of the way down the first page. Pugluvr had the dogs out, and they were carrying the extra socks around to even MORE threads - I think some of 'em even ended up in “About This Message Board”! How’s THAT for zany?!?

Nacho4Sara went around gathering ‘em up. Pretty soon, she was starting a thread in MPSIMS about how Manservant was runnin’ around the boards naked, and how we all should keep bringing his clothes to her thread so he couldn’t find 'em. Quite a few joined in on that one, while Manservant had to stay on the sidelines because by then he was completely out of clothing. He had counted on being able to go back and pick it all up again, but Nacho4Sara and the pugs had foiled that plan.

Meanwhile, Strainger and wring were resurrecting one of their famous “Gerbil Nuts and Ho-Ho’s” threads. Scylla was trying to make his Margarita angle fit in, but Chef Troy had him beat with his Gallantine discussion. And don’t even get me started on the whole “Undercover Monkeys” thing that Fenris started. I don’t even want to get into that one.

I would mention here that it is a well-known fact that I have an enormous penis, but then, folklore usually isn’t true, so I don’t think it counts.

Carry on.

well, i guess this stuff is the kind of stuff i was talking about, especially the thing about the clothing bit (although a better explanation may help there).

also, i have no idea what a sock puppet is.

i guess to try to help out, it seems like i see people like handy and a few others everywhere, and also i remember seeing long ago someone who used to post completely with strange creatures built out of ascii art and smileys. who was that and why did they do that?

That would’ve been Sweet Sue, last spotted at the end of April. It was likely a gimmick that was intended to be cute but came off as annoying, but I dunno…

Sock puppets and trolls are currently being discussed here.

btw, how many mods are there?

Ummm… How about hte “Hi Opal” Thing. From what I have gathered (please correct me if I am wrong) a while ago OpalCat was bitching about how a list with just two things on it was NOT a list. So, people who made lists with just 2 things on them would put “Hi Opal” as number three. Now people will often put it as number 3 wether the list has more then two things or not.

thanks heraldgwena, i just saw that hi opal thing and was curious as to what that meant.

i was curious about anygirl’s response too, did that make sense to anyone?

by the way, i just wanted to also say that the teeming millions page has exactly some of the stuff i was looking for, but it is just not detailed enough and looks like it needs to be updated.

that and i wanted the thread to go back up to the top so that people would notice it.

a list of questions:

  1. Who’s the oldest poster?

  2. who’s made the most posts? (is it Handy?)

  3. Hi, Opal!!

Sorry… just had to be done…
okay, I feel better now

Once upon a time, Coldfire and Mullinator got crosswise and/or a bet of some sort was placed (I never learned the original tale of how this got started, if you know please post!) and Coldfire set up Mully with this thread.

Mully, in all fairness, acquitted himself so well that others started to feel that, rather than it being a practical joke at Mully’s expense, it was a showcase opportunity, and some folks got jealous.

Chef Troy among them. He started his own thread offering himself up in Mully’s stead, and this thread lasted considerably longer.

Yes, click the links. I could not do justice to the contents by trying to summarize!

The oldest? I dunno… I’m 35, but I know there are people posting here older than that.

The most posts? Yup. Handy

Silo? Is that really you?

I’m laughing too hard to type…

gerbil nuts?
I miss something?

One of the most loved posters in the history of the SDMB was WallyM7. Wally sadly died last year but his spirit is still strong here. Check out some of his gems at his memorial page.
