Callard and Bowser, a British candy company. I used to get their toffees at a coffee store that had a lot of imported stuff. Like Toblerone, which used to be only available at places like that, and at stores that sold hiking and camping equipment.
Smokin’ Hot BBQ Doritos. Bubbilcious Orange and Bubbilicious Raspberry. Cherry M&Ms. Ore-Ida Cottage Fries.
And two things that are available, but not in my neck of the woods: Nathan’s fries (frozen), and classic Tastykake snack pies. The baked, rectangular kind, not the new glazed turnovers like the ones Hostess has. They and the Nathan’s fries are plentiful in eastern Pennsylvania. So whenever I travel there, I buy all I can. (I bring a cooler for the fries.)
My favourite breakfast cereal ever was “Kellogg’s Krumbles”. I loved it as a child but I was the only one in the house that liked it so I had to be a “pretty good kid” to get dad to buy them. They disappeared when I was a young adult. Probably early '70’s or so.
Ebinger’s Chocolate Blackout cake. The ultimate in chocolate cakes, but once Ebinger’s went out of business, no one made a replacement.
Schweppes Bitter Lemon soda. One of my favorites as a kid. I liked the fact that it wasn’t sweet at all. Still made in the UK, but not the US.
Hostess Suzy-Q’s didn’t seem to survive the Hostess bankruptcy. They rivaled the Hostess cupcake for pure chocolate goodness. Though probably they would have messed with the recipe so it wouldn’t be as good.
Wendys used to have a great Mandarin Chicken Salad that no only was the best salad in any fast food place but was also pretty good for nutrition (especially if you left off the Chinese noodles). It vanished around 2010 or so.
Torengos - they were tortilla chips that came in a can similar to Pringles, but they were triangular. Very easy to eat a whole can because they were light and not too greasy.
Oh, McDonald’s fajitas! How I miss them! Only a dollar each, one wasn’t quite enough, two were a little too much to eat. I’ve never had any quite so good…And those hot disgusting celery/cabbage filled La Choy mini-eggrolls, bite in and boiling hot liquid exploded. But so addictive!..ok, I miss a Tastykake treat that had pineapple and coconut in it, maybe it was a limited edition. Just scrumptious!
Lum’s burgers and fries, heavily coated with spice. Oh, some company claims they sell the seasoning online, but it’s just seasoned salt. Lum’s burgers had a mass of spices and seeds.
Honestly, the ingredient list back then doesn’t seem like it that much different than now. It’s always just been starch, flavor enhancers (the yeast), flavor enhancers (the MSG), salt, and flavorings. Now they only seem to be more specific about what flavorings they use.
These were chocolate chip flavored and they had a certain texture and taste that I’ve never found replicated. I doubt they were any more nutritional that a candy bar but you could get your mom to buy them because they had the word “breakfast” in the name.
Heinz tinned sponge puddings. The ones with Cadbury’s chocolate sauce were particularly good, and they only took a couple of minutes in the microwave. We had one left in the cupboard when we found out they were discontinued and it was a sad day when we finally ate it.
Maybe they just use too much of it now ? I know I’m not the only one who can taste a huge difference from the Doritos of yesteryear (not to be confused with the Doritos of Yore).
I hate to be the guy, but…we are all in the same boat. :p:smack:
One positive is that we can buy cheapo stuff and pretend its the good stuff because we cant taste the difference. But lima beans will always taste horrible.
Arby’s used to have a turkey sub on a stadium roll. They had the perfect creamy Italian dressing to pair with the turkey, lettuce, and white cheese of some type. I’d drink that dressing if I could find it.
