oh my god, yes! That is perfection!
Right this very minute I am eating one of my favorite snacks- A Triscot cracker with a little bit of the spray cheese in a can, a couple slices of green olives smooshed into it and topped with a THIN slice of summer sausage. MMMMMMMMMMM!!! Way better than it might sound!
I love to put yellow mustard and chopped dill pickle in my cottage cheese.
As a kid I used to spread peanut butter on a Kraft singles slice. I liked it. One of my brothers thought it was disgusting, but then the other pointed out that those cheese crackers with peanut butter filling is very popular in vending machines.
My dad liked weird combinations. P.O.T. sandwich – peanut butter, onion & tomato. But then, Dad would eat just about anything with peanut butter.
That actually sounds pretty darn good to me. I don’t know if it’d be considered weird, gross, or more likely just plain gluttonous, but I like to take the strawberry Swiss rolls and dip them in a ton of cool whip before each bite.
Years ago, an acquaintance introduced me to French fries dipped in ketchup and sour cream. Good stuff, but folks are apt to give you funny looks…
And my brother is quite fond of ketchup mixed into his grits. I’ve tried it, and it’s not terrible.
If you think about it, there’s probably not a lot of things that would make grits better.
I say that as someone who likes grits, but it doesn’t have much flavor. Grits is kind of like the shaved ice of the hot vegetable mush world.
The same could be said for rice or potatoes or pasta: the main appeal is that they’re bland, marry well with other flavors, and bulk out a meal inexpensively.
Better than that: tartar sauce and french fires.
My friend recommended grilled cheese with jelly on it. I tried it. It was very weird, but not bad enough for me to stop eating the sandwich I had. Then by the time I was done I wanted another one. I still sometimes get cravings for and eat one. It has to be the right combination of jelly and cheese though.
Heh, I’m eating that right this minute. Strawberry jelly, sharp cheddar cheese, on honey wheat bread.
I like to take the makings of a chili dog (chili, cheese, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo, the weenie, the bun) chop it all up, mix it into a bowl, and nuke it in the microwave just long enough for the cheese to start to melt.
Everyone who hasn’t seen me it a hotdog things it’s weird, until they try it. It completely changes the taste and texture of the hotdog when done this way. Looks like vomit, but tastes wonderful. Especially good if you toss in some bbq chips.
On Sunday mornings, after Mass, my dad used to fry up smoked bacon slices and in the grease fry eggs, bananas, apples and white bread slices until all were golden brown.
The stacked “sammiches” of bread, bacon, eggs and fruit are a glorious memory of my childhood.
Today, I would try one, for old times sake, but likely would pass on the apples. The rest…yummy.
See that’s an odd one because I love ketchup (actually Fountain’s Spicy Red Sauce) on fried eggs but the idea of putting it on scrambled eggs, or any other kind of eggs, disgusts me.
I mix mushrooms, water chestnuts and bamboo shoots in my tuna salad. Yum yum yum!
How about avocado and cottage cheese? Someone I know adores it.
Forgot one I picked up from Doug off of Nickelodeon. Bananas and pizza sauce. My sister dared me to try it after we first saw Doug do it, and I was pleasantly surprised.
Also, I like cucumber on my pizza in place of pepperoni.
Odd but good: Prosciutto Italian ham wrapped around sliced cantaloupe.
Reading the Ramen noodles with some peanut butter added in, which was mentioned above: This makes total sense, because Thai dishes use peanut sauces, so it’s hardly a stretch for many millions of people. It fits with various Asian fare and Thai-influenced dishes.
Also, regarding vinegar on french fries: Millions of East coast 'mericans enjoy french fries with vinegar along shore/beach towns every summer. It’s a standard and might be the most popular beach food along the North East USA (see 'boardwalk fries or ‘Curly Fries’)
.
Fritos and cream cheese. It’s actually the only thing I’ve ever used cream cheese for.
I’ve seen malt vinegar on fries and seafood like you described, but I’ve only seen white vinegar popular near the Canadian border. As always, YMMV.
Tuna fish two-fer. One is mine and one is a friend’s.
Mine is Sweet Relish on Tuna fish. Yum yum yum.
The other which I admit I found foul from a consistency point of view more than taste is cream cheese on tuna fish.
I do peanut butter with hot peppers and cheese. Really, I don’t think peanut butter with onions, garlic, peppers, other savory items, etc., is particularly odd, it’s just that in American we associate it with sweet jelly. Elsewhere, it tends to be used as a savory ingredient.
