Foods considered "low end" that you love.

Spam!

(I think I win.)

Even “Spam Lite” which we call “Lady Spam” at our house!

And…fried bologna on white bread with Miracle Whip.

I’m a WASP Episcopalian…my soul food is American cheese on Wonder Bread with mayo.

Sigh I wish I had some ethnicity. I am soooo jealous of my friends who have families with “ethnic” traditions. Today at my husband’s Italian barber’s shop (I love his barber and consider him and his family part of my extended family), I told one of the other customers that when I was there or with them, I was Italian. Sort of like the line in the song “Walking in Memphis.” “She asked, are you a Christian child…I said, ma’am, I am tonight…”.

When I’m with my Indian friends, their food is “my food.” Funny, turns out that every “group” I have pals who belong to, they have low end foods as well as we Americans. Gotta love it. Don’t you just love this world? I had a gastric bypass and still love my low end foods.

Funny, but I was thinking of starting a thread very much like this one about a week or so ago. This is because I was making “Frito Pie” for my lunch. Frito Pie is as follows:
Put a bed of Frito chips (or, more “low-end” yet, generic corn chips) on a dinner plate. Top with canned chili (the kind with beef and beans, thankyewverymuch)

Microwave until the chili is warm but not hot.

Add a layer of shredded cheese. I generally use cheddar, but whatever is on sale at your local Aldi’s is fine.

Microwave until the cheese melts.

Scoop up the fatty/protein-y chili/cheese goodness with the chips.

Mmmmmmm. Can’t you just feel your arteries hardening?

I’ve heard of this, but never knew exactly what it was or how to make it. Sounds divine, and thank you so much for ruining my diet!

We could have this for dinner and your cheesecake for dessert.

Do you buy those, or rent 'em?

And are they smoked?

[QUOTE=Ducktail]

ground beef issued by one of the most overwhelmed school districts in the country (Clark County), I don’t even want to know what was in it, but I could eat it by the spoonful. It was greasy, sweet-tasting, and absolutely delicious.

Grease and sugar, for two.

Come to think of it, those two plus some packing peanuts and brown food coloring could probably been its entire composition.

We’re on, and I’ll bet everyone will love it!

Haven’t seen this mentioned, but Chef Boy R Dee Canned Ravioli is my favorite low-end pantry staple. I can eat that stuff at room temp out of the can. And none of the low fat-cheese ravioli, sausage ravioli, or the overstuffed version (doesn’t taste right to me), it’s gotta be the regular beef flavor in tomato sauce. Growing up it was occasionally the main course at dinner during the leaner times, and now it’s a quick lunch on occasion or a treat when I need some comfort. Mmmm…

An aside: Spam fans (you know who you are), I saw a product at my local Walmart – Spam Singles. That’s right, a single slice of Spam in aseptic foil packaging. The single slice costs $.94, while an entire can costs just under $1.75 locally. Is it worth it, fans? Would you buy it?

Love, Phil
