Foods you get powerful cravings for

Bakewell tart, apparantly (it was what my soul told me when I read the thread title). Proper bakewell tart, mind, not that ***** Mr Kipling flogs.

And, as above, a proper bloody steak. But I just had one, which is probably why I’m craving a dessert…

Pepper steak, a la creme
Burger and fries
Kettle chips
Chicken fried steak
Biscuits and gravy

Ah, halushki; you’re speaking my language here. I don’t exactly crave it, but it’s awesome when the cupboard is almost bare. I like it just as you say, with a bit of herb for flavor and color (garlic and scallions or parsley or something–cabbage or other greens if I have it).

Sushi, most any type. Lox and smoked salmon. Sometimes a fried egg. A top quality steak, preferably dry aged.

Dickey’s Barbecue. The closest to me right now is about 25 miles away, but I’ll make that drive, probably later today (Friday, yay!).

Another vote for chicken fried steak. Beware of anyplace that calls it “country fried steak”; the cfs itself might be okay, but you’ll probably find the gravy and sides a disappointment. Cfs is about the only food I am snobbish about: breaded tenderized round steak, white (NOT brown!) gravy on the steak AND mashed (but not too much – the lumps are important) potatoes, black-eyed peas is the proper “Texas” way to serve cfs. With plenty of black pepper and hot sauce for the diner to season for taste.

Damn it, now I crave Sattua’s homemade bibimbap.

Where do you live?

Central Illinois until Monday morning. Then anywhere along I-90 for 4-5 days. Then west of Seattle, I hope for the rest of my life.

If you don’t mind a slight detour to the DC area, send me a list of ingredients and you can come make it in my kitchen. I’ll chip in a 10 spot for gas.

Wrong Washington, chuck.

Congrats on your escape, Sattua. I too live in central Illinois. Worst spring / early summer we’ve had in YEARS. I am jealous of your west-of-Seattle adventure!

I get cravings for:

Tabbouleh
Hummus
Dark chocolate
Cream cheese and olive sandwiches (though not for a while)
Fried okra with hot sauce
Anything with coconut. Lately I’ve been craving pina coladas to an indecent level
Many kinds of cheese, especially sharp cheddars and goat cheeses
Puppy chow (not for the dog; the human-edible variety made with some kind of Chex cereal, peanut butter, and chocolate)
Dried mango pieces
Dried cherries
Spinach

On my globe, it’s only a few inches away. C’mon, be a good neighbor!

I stand corrected. We don’t have them here in the northeast, then.

Great, now I want chicken fried steak with delicious, peppery white gravy.

And I don’t think anyone near Boston makes it. >:(

Not rarely here. I love Taco Bell. I love their Beefy 5-layer burrriots, their Beefy Frito Burritos(only $1), their soft tacos, and their gorditas.

Love Taco Bell.

I also get cravings for Salt and Vinegar chips, White Castle, Big Bacon Burgers at Wendy’s, large sodas(Peach-Mello-Yellow rocks), Candy Apple Faygo, and this Chinese Buffet by us that makes outrageously good food.

I really crave teriyaki…or more accurately, the thought or smell of it really makes me hungry. Teriyaki beef or ribs with teriyaki sauce are a huge craving for me.

I’m on a diet now, so I have developed a real craving for salads, though I put a little more buttermilk ranch than I should in them.

Big Macs.
Fortunately it happens only once or twice a year.

Store-brand wavy chips, plain. Not “ruffled”; “wavy.”

The OP

My bold.

I couldn’t get this out of my mind. I believe that any dish involving rice could be improved by frying the already-cooked rice in a pan until the bottom is crusty and toasty and then piling ANYTHING on top, including grass clippings, shoe leather, and old soggy newspapers.

Last night I put cooked white rice (Trader Joe’s frozen jasmine that you heat in the microwave) in a frying pan with some butter and olive oil and cooked until it was roasty-toasty and then heaped with one of my favorite flavor combos, corn and chopped-up calabacita (summer squash), steamed until tender. [Make sure you pick out SMALL squash, no more than 4" long, as the big ones can be quite bitter.]

Yummy. Not highly seasoned, but I worked with what I had. Will be conducting further exploration in the toasty-rice department.

Chicken wings.
I am quite disciplined when it comes to food but, every few weeks, I Must Have Wings.
I enjoy many, many foods but go without for mostly vanity reasons but there’s some healthy eating guilt in there, too. For example, I maintain a pretty low carb diet which knocks out a ton of formerly craved foods*. I make allowances here and there, usually for social outings & holidays but chicken wings are on the acceptable list which let’s me give in without feeling like a major overindulgence.

For example, a couple weeks ago, I was at the White Sox game. This would be the type of event I’d grab a hot dog. But when I went hunting for food, I came across a Hooters stand. It was a ripoff and I knew they would be shit but I couldn’t resist.
Yes, they were soggy having been made probably the night before.
Yes, they were not hot, barely warm.
Yes, Hooters wings are not really very good to begin with.
Yes, I picked them clean.

I had some WingStop last night, too

*Miss you, hot dogs, tacos, italian beefs, pizza, fries, potatoes, corn, beans, fruits, rice, pasta, breads, hundreds more. Gah.

Mmm I love wings, too. We tried ordering them in, but they were so expensive it was ridiculous. So instead I start with frozen wings, cover them in soy sauce, hickory salt, paprika, garlic powder, and hot sauce, then bake 'til they’re good and rendered and the sauce is syrupy–about 90 minutes at 425F. I call 'em sticky wings and my family can demolish a whole tray at one sitting.
