Satan said that I got in a few jabs over there. (One guy wants to know what you’d do with a fossilized T.rex egg; how would you look inside it without damaging it? I’m gonna ask if he’s ever heard of X-rays.)
I thought it would interest all of you to know my screen name is simply my initials. Yes, my initials are an anagram. Kinda cool.
They’re also my father’s initials (and name - I’m a Junior) and our middle name is Autry, after Gene Autry, my Granny’s favorite movie star.
Yes, Tom, we are having fun. You can tell by all the smileys.
Ok, before the sainted doctor shoots me, I’ll stop that.
Anyway, as I indicated earlier, I have not lied about anything. I am merely posting viewpoints that they may have not heard before. Of course, if I just came in there blasting, they would likely not listen to me. So I’m being nice. (Sorry, that one slipped.)
I know several of my messages in a row (here) have been a bit, well, silly. But, hey, it’s amusing for now. One difference between the trolls that come 'round here and our group is that we will discuss things. Indeed, that’s what we have been doing. Heck, one person there called my mind “awesome.”
Overall, if they are going to say things that aren’t true (such as their characterization of evolution, as only one example), I don’t see why we should knowingly let it be. As long as we’re not jerks about it (and from the looks of things, if we were jerks, we’d be very quickly booted), I don’t really see a problem.
Tom, I should add that I do find some of their views, well, interesting. That’s one reason I’ve posed a few questions – to see what they think (how they think) on those issues. There is also the axiom that one should know one’s “enemy.” I’d never heard the “cruelism” argument before – but I woulnd’t expect it to stay limited to that message board. Now, when I do hear it, I will have some experience in dealing with it.
David (or should I say “Daniel”?), I see you posted on the Noah’s Flood topic. Saved in '73 thinks the land masses float on water. I tried to clear it up using my admittedly limited knowledge of geology. Now the guy seems to think the core of the Earth is hotter now than it was in the past. Thomas said
Exactly.
Speaking as someone who’s shot himself in the foot before, I’d sure like to know how one can doing it without feeling it?
I won’t be posting as much in the next two weeks as I have been because of the holiday coming up. In fact, I may not post again until December. I’m going to see my mother during Thanksgiving and I’ll be gone two weeks.
Keep up the good work. And maybe Phaedrus will come to the point over at “The Earth is Flat…” before I return.
Well, this doesn’t really have anything to do with the Creation Debate, but I thought some of you might be interested.
The topic is To all married women: God says to submit to your husband.
What bothers me is that so many women on that board agree wholeheartedly that their role is, ultimately, to obey their man.
From my experience, this is total BS, but some of you may believe it. Others may be outraged by it. Either way, I don’t think that it’s a topic that will frequently rear its head on SDMB.
Thanks for your comments on that thread over there…I was beginning to get angry at all of those women. Reminded me why I left a Catholic group for girls in college. Same thing. However, I can’t post there because I’ll probably just spout my mouth off…so thanks for giving an opposing point of view.
“Men are from Earth, women are from Earth. Deal with it.” - George Carlin
FWIW, my wife is a Southern Baptist, and when I remind her that she’s expected to ‘graciously submit to the servant-leadership of her husband,’ she just rolls her eyes.
Of course, she doesn’t buy into a whole lot of what her denomination’s been pushing during the last couple of decades…
There are two problems with this submission business:
First, across a whole host of ‘Christian’ issues, the problem usually doesn’t come when someone takes a Scriptural admonition to heart for themselves; the problem is when a group of people take one to heart that applies to somebody else.
It’s wonderful stuff: If I’m in that group, it gets me off the hot seat, and allows me to make my Christian duty the ‘uplifting’ of somebody else, by laying burdens on them rather than supporting them.
So the fundies emphasize the verses that tell gays they’re abominations, and that tell women to submit.
As a husband, I know that if we bought into this notion of wifely submission, I’d run roughshod over my wife, not on anything major, probably, but on a host of little things. Being able to lay down the law would save me the trouble of having to listen to her, to know and understand her better. My being able to claim that authority would make it far less likely that I would ‘love my wife as Christ loved the Church.’ One thing worth remembering about Christ is that he didn’t use his authority. So even if it’s a good verse for wives to heed (I’m coming to this), it’s a bad idea for the rest of us to make a mantra of it.
And even if only the wives took it to heart: how many women would stay - how many already have - in a dangerous, abusive situation far longer than they should, simply because of this admonition? I can’t imagine what gains are to be had from obeying this admonition that could offset that sort of thing.
Jab, I dunno how much I’ll post there in upcoming days either. Obviously, Thanksgiving is coming up, so I’ll have less free time. I certainly won’t be spending as much time there as I have in the past couple days. We’ll see.
Constable is being quite irrational, and I let a little more of my true personality out (not much, but a bit). It’ll be interesting to see how the others react.
I really didn’t intend to post several in a row again, but you guys have just got to see this. It’s over in the Fellowship Hall (not the debate area), and it’s about whether Cabbage Patch dolls are satanic – and it was started by Kat2, the very person who told Satan about the board: http://www.leftbehind.com/cgi-bbs/Forum7/HTML/004280.html
Actually, I meant I won’t be able to post as much anywhere, including the SDMB. Mom doesn’t have a computer and the one library in her county doesn’t have one, either.
So, if this is my last posting for the next ten days or so, take care, everyone.
