Yup, Falcon, notice I didn’t cite the quote. To them, it’s probably a good thing to surrender for prayer – but I’m sure that’s not the way (agnostic/atheist) Neil Peart meant it!
For those who haven’t seen it, the quote it: “You can surrender without a prayer, but never really pray without surrender.”
Actually, that is a very true statement, from a Christian point of view.
Which, FWIW, is one thing that’s wrong with school prayer in all of its sordid variations. Actual encounter with God that might necessitate the individual’s surrender to God isn’t an object.
The real goal of the school-prayer proponents is to mark territory. Instead of doing that with a flag, like a nation does, or with urine, like a dog might, they do it with public prayer.
I don’t know if I could bear to post with people who think this is good writing:
“Rayford Steele’s mind was on a woman he had never touched. With his fully loaded 747 on autopilot above the Atlantic en route to a 6 A.M. landing at Heathrow, Rayford had pushed from his mind thoughts of his family…Rayford tried to tell himself it was his wife’s devotion to a divine suitor that caused his mind to wander. But he knew the real reason was his own libido.”
Geezus. It reads like every trashy aiport kiosk paperback ever sold. “Rayford Steele”? His name sounds like he moonlights in those harlequin novels. I loathe the writing style; this guy is one of those authors who feel the need to beat you over the head with what he wants you to think. Heck, you’re not allowed to think. He couldn’t show us that Rayford is making excuses for cheating; no, he has to tell us that he is.
“Happiness is nonetheless true happiness because it must come to an end, nor do thought and love lose their value because they are not everlasting.”
Uh-oh, DavidB…Thomas is asking for a response… < grin >
And yes, I’ve joined the fray in the “7 days?” thread…I was the one refuting the “Astronauts only found a half-inch of dust on the moon” thing. A Christian that believes in evolution…hope I don’t get flamed to a crisp.

snicker. I’ll bet there’s some Old Testament passage that denounces items used to divine the future, and this is what Kat2 was basing his opinion on.
Trouble is, the Urim and Thummim are also used to divine the future, but their use is encouraged by the Old Testament. At least if you’re a priest. Maybe the Urim and Thummim makers didn’t like competition.
Did you see this thread? http://www.leftbehind.com/cgi-bbs/Forum8/HTML/001055-2.html
I know Falcon did. I was appalled at most of the answers. I, personally, would not date someone who’s not religious, but it’s no one’s damn if I do, even if I do hold a leadership position in a religious organization. I think Byteoart had the best response. So did Falcon :)!
On a side note, I’d like to be able to include those little icons in the top left corners of our posts. My favorite is the ‘angry face!’
Did you see my response? (Or has he responded to that – I have to go check.) I let off some steam at these idiots who clog up the threads so nobody can follow what the hell is going on there. I wanted to point out that nobody was answering a number of the questions I posted, but when he posted his message, well, it looks a lot less selfish to say I couldn’t answer his questions.
Of course, if they are the “do you believe the Bible” questions, I’m gonna point back to when he asked Nightmare that and got reamed by several other participants.
They don’t seem to do much flaming. Probably get banned if you do. But I’m sure they’ll ostracize you nicely.
Strainger: You’re the first person to vote for the icons. All the mods and admins (well, all who had an opinion I remember, anyway) voted against them when we were testing the upgrade. And Gaudere voted against 'em in this thread. I think they’re occasionally amusing, but if somebody can’t tell when somebody else is pissed around here without the help of an icon, then one or the other just isn’t doing too well.
Navigator asked our lovely Falcon if she had looked at the evidence for Creation. I hope he answers me, as I would love the opportunity to let him hear some of the responses I’ve heard from Evolutionists for that “evidence”.
Gaudere, were you quoting from one of Tim LaHaye’s novels? Boy, that’s the sort of writing that makes ‘hackneyed’ look good by comparison.
I’ve got an update from the biblical-errorsthread: ghoti published a link to a 1978 statement by a bunch of evangelical leaders on just what inerrancy means, the Chicago Statement, which includes the following luscious quote:
In other words, the Bible may still tell you what’s right and wrong, but if you can get people to agree that a particular passage is ‘culturally conditioned,’ its remedies can be ignored.
So maybe homosexuality is still wrong, but in some minimalist sense where we can say, ‘yeah, but it’s not as big a deal as, say, not flossing after meals.’
Hey, their interpretation of inerrancy, not mine. Of course, it’s my interpretation of their interpretation…
Mjollnir started a thread on the SDMB vs. LBMB over in MPSIMS. He referenced this thread but didn’t post a link. I think we should studiously avoid that thread and hope it sinks quickly. After all, we wouldn’t want somebody like Kat2 finding this thread and going back to the Left Behind folks to tell them about it.
On another note, DrF said:
If he doesn’t answer you, remind him that he didn’t answer. That’s what Thomas has been doing.
David B, I was being facetious about the icons. I’m sure they’d be more cumbersome than they’d be worth. I did get a chuckle out of the icon/statement combinations on some of those posts, though.
Yeah, RTFirefly, the excerpt I quoted is from The Rapture. You can read more at http://www.leftbehind.com/books/left_behind/lb_excerpt.html I can understand why these people would be excited about the books if they were well-written; it’s an interesting premise. But that prose is so godawful…
Yo Satan! This true? (And oh lord…I just thought of a REALLY nasty way to take “icing” in that sense…)
And yes, I’ve posted there too…they just hit my hot button on this. I sat with a friend as he left the Church because of people like Thomas. I’ll be damned if I let them sit there and pass judgement.
