For David B, the good Doctor and others who are knowledgable about Creation debate

Kaylasdad, I’ve been following this thread from it’'s inception and occassionally lurking at LBMB.

I’m still trying to figure out when, where and how the LBMB was “attacked.”

I was just reading a thread on the devil over there, and a guy named Bishop said he didn’t think the devil existed.

They eventually hounded him off the board. The picture that comes to mind is a group of sharks in a feeding frenzy. Now that was an attack. And I’m still shaking my head about what they did here.

It’s fascinating. I see a cult coming into being right before my eyes.

Not meaning to hijack this thread (though maybe it could use it!), I have to thank Kaylasdad for giving me several minutes of long, loud laughter for his recitation of one memborable Christmas Eve!

-Melin

I, toot…er I mean too, would have to agree and say thank you for the good laugh…I was just waiting to hear you tell us that you were bent over the flame at the time of flatulation…NOW THERE’S A MEMORY!!

I just couldn’t resist posting MBagnall’s latest post on the LBMB:

Given the basically civil nature of the posts to or about Mr. Bagnall on this board, I’d say he’s exaggerating the nature of his emails as well.

And to think he was the one trying to stop the war: 1. What war? 2. That’s how you stop one? Seems like that’s how you invent one.

Geez. What a loser.

Now now, that wouldn’t look very good on a fire insurance policy, now would it?

They’ve been spared * **WHAT? ** *

I will not make a Kool-Aid joke I will not make a Kool-Aid joke I will not make a Kool-Aid joke

sigh

I don’t know which is sadder … the fact that I simulposted with RTFirefly there, so my little quip about fire insurance lost its “connection” with SellingFireInsurance’s message about flatulating on the candle-lighter …

… or the idea that, if mbagnall came back and read the last few messages in this thread, he’d probably think my “fire insurance policy” quip was an attack against that copy of HIS posting. (AFAIK, he’s still denying the existence of an Atlantic Monthly review of the LB series – and probably the existence of Atlantic Monthly magazine itself.)

The truth, as always, is more complicated than that.

KaylasDad: The candle-lighting stick is called a taper.

I’m also a Lefbehind-er, and I’m not a “fundie”. Hope you all don’t mind my visiting. Don’t know how long I’ll stay, it depends on how long the Spirit wants me here. In the meantime, I’ll have to count on your hospitality. Blessings!

You post to the Left Behind Message Board … and you’re not a fundamentalist?!

Wow. I thought that was, like, a logical contradiction, or something. In any rate, welcome aboard! We don’t have any root beer or popcorn over here, though, so you’ll have to forage through the 'fridge for yourself.

Ladyjane, rational and polite folks are ALWAYS welcome!

I’ll take one, thanks…

Greetings!

I can’t believe I’ve been in the dark for so long – that such an “Board War” (in the words of the LBMB admin) has been going on and me ignorant of it!! I must be doing too much work at work…

For those who think they know me, yer wrong! I just found out about the SDMB this morning. Ironically, I’ve been a fan of the column for about 9 years. I own two of the books! Perhaps I’m getting too good at ignoring those ubiquitous “www.blah-blah.com” things for my own good.

My foray into Left Behind has been interesting. Some of the people there are closed minded, to be sure, but not all of them. I’ve engaged in some honest debates – you just have to pick a topic that is remotely open to objective scrutiny – though there tends to be a point where science and reason just won’t cut it anymore. After that you either get ignored or you get hellfire and damnation.

I think I might be spending more time here, now that I know it exists.

I’m so skeptical I can hardly believe it!

Frankly, Thomas, in seeing some of your posts there, we were trying to figure out which one of us you were.

Hey, waitaminute! You only own two of the books?! Well, you’d better get hopping and order the rest! Sheesh…

David B-

Hey now!! Do not confuse me with this “Thomas” character… He (?) and I have very little in common. To wit:

Me: Agnostic, scientist, skeptic, curious, open-minded, respectful, deeeelightful in every respect, tons ‘o’ fun at parties

Him: not

'Nuff said.

PS – You try keeping your library up to date while in grad school! I could hardly afford to buy Kraft Mac ‘n’ Cheese!!

I’m so skeptical I can hardly believe it!

Sorry, DT, I would never confuse the two of you, but I figured I could call you “Thomas” here, as I haven’t seen the other one around here.

BTW, if you buy the generic mac & cheese instead of Kraft, you can save enough money to buy another Straight Dope book!

Incidentally, we all know what brought us to the Left Behind board (Satan tempted us), but what brought you there? Just curious (you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to).

Don’t worry, DT, there is no way I’d confuse you with the other Thomas. I’ve read your posts on the LBMB (sorry if I never had the opportunity to respond to any of them!), but was frequently on the receiving end of his.

Actually, he demonstrates that miracles still occur - it’s a miracle he’s lived this long.

God made you me all of us. I will tell you the truth you can try to tell me the lie but I will not believe it

God made you me all of us. I will tell you the truth you can try to tell me the lie but I will not believe it

David B–

An interesting question, and one worthy of more time spent away from my job. …Yes, I actually have a job and can no longer claim to be the destitute grad student, too poor to buy the Straight Dope collection… Now I can simply claim to be cheap!

You have no idea how often LBers have asserted, “You were brought to this board for a reason. And that reason is to become part of the Body of Christ.” Hooboy…

How’d I come across LBMB? I’ve long found apocalyptic beliefs fascinating, and last April I happened across an online archive of “This American Life” (public radio out of WBEZ, I think) that talked about various end-of-the-world theories. It mentioned and provided a link to Left Behind.

For a while I thought I could add to the discussion, but for several reasons that turned out not to be the case. I hasten to reiterate what I mentioned earlier – there are many intelligent, open-minded people there who really do want to have discussions on topics like evolution, prayer in schools, posting the 10 Commandments, etc. However, such people are the minority. In addition, the size and high turnover (and often the young age and lack of formal science education) of the membership required that basic arguments be repeated over and over again. (If I had a dollar for each time I explained why the 2nd Law of thermodynamics does not disprove evolution, I’d not only own the Straight Dope books, I’d hire Cecil to come to my house and read them to me in bed! Er, I mean,… you know.)

Lately I’ve grown tired of being a voice “crying out in the wilderness” about rationality, objectivity, the scientific method, skepticism, occam’s razor, etc. Besides, Daniel Schwarr (love that anagram!) was doing a fine job of it himself before he got frustrated.

…The strange thing is that I’ve actually grown used to the sheer credulity and narrowness of mind there. I no longer notice it unless something truly outrageous is claimed – like someone stating that they can ‘prove’ young-earth creationism and Noah’s flood; or that aliens exist, but are fallen angels sent to tempt us away from Christ; or that Prince Charles is the antichrist.

Anyhow, I don’t want to badmouth the people there personally – almost universally my views and my right to post them have been treated with respect. I may continue to post there occassionally. Besides, if you want to be able to debate someone, you have to know what they believe and why.
