I know right? I think MrDibble feels some sort of idiot kinship. One of the things that amuses me the most about this board is how much atheists have no common denominator other than not believing in God, but they’ll always come to the defense of a fellow atheist when you express a personal distaste for that person.

Der Trihs is:

  1. Not very bright
  2. A total prick

He’s not an honest interlocutor. Why argue with someone when you know that the only purpose is so they can lure you in so they can berate you for believing something that they don’t believe. Then they create some macro category that expects you to be responsible for the behavior of all religious people ever. “It’s ok for me to be an intolerant prick because of THE INQUISITION!!!”, as though I had anything do with it, and I was oppressing his ancestors.

I think it’s sort of a shared insecurity that many atheists share. I can’t come up with any other reason why reasonably intelligent people will jump so vociferously to the defense of an irrational moron.

Not true. There are a number of us atheists/agnostics who make a point to not defend people like DT, and to distinguish our positions from his. I have many times, including in this thread. In fact, my sense is that it is only a minority of that group who will do what you say they “always” do.

I don’t go into Great Debates much, so I’m not familiar with how Der Trihs acts there, but I’ve seen him occasional here in the Pit and it didn’t take long for me to decide that he’s not interested in discussion or debate, just in rabid name-calling and shrill diatribes on his two favorite topics (does that make him a two-trick pony, btw?). “Arguing” with him is like firing a pellet gun at a Jell-O mold; it just goes through without accomplishing anything but making a mess.

For your information, I happen to be an atheist who believes that we had no business sending troops to Iraq. I just don’t think it is necessary to act like a raving lunatic when dealing with people who have beliefs or opinions different from mine.

Look, nobody wants to see DT gone because he is an atheist. Or even an outspoken atheist. There are many on this board who, if they left, I’d, a Theist, be sad to see go. Can you not comprehend that the vast majority of posters simply think he’s a douchebag—aside from his positions? As you point out, just look at how often he’s pitted? Just look how many people who share most of his views regarding atheism or Iraq can’t stand him.
