My daughter, a University of Colorado student, called me the other day and said “Do you know that there is an Australian rugby team having a training camp on campus?” She hasn’t been to Australia but I lived in Canberra for five years, so she doesn’t know footy from rugby. She and I went to the basketball game on Wednesday (rivalry game, Colorado vs. Colorado State) and I saw a few of the players in their St. Kilda gear and went over to talk to them. It seems they are doing a high altitude training camp to get ready for the season, and they are doing long hikes in the mountains as well as training on the CU campus.
They were all really nice and loved the basketball game. They have also been to the Denver Broncos training facility to watch practice and meet the players, and were on the field for the Broncos-Buccaneers game last Sunday. They seem to be loving it in Boulder, especially since they have acclimated to the altitude. They told me there were videos of their trip on their website, and I have been watching them. I am going to their training tomorrow. It weird that I can just walk up to these guys and engage them in casual conversation, while Melbournites (?) probably never get near them.
It should be interesting for them this weekend when our unusually warm early winter turns cold. The high on Sunday is forecast to be 25°F (-4°C) with snow.
