For the moderators

Will you tell us who the 200,000th person to post is?

Oh, I dunno. Maybe. If you can’t figure it out for yourself (‘cause you’re bright boyz an’ girlz) and if you bring me a plate of cookies. But if we do, we’ll do it in About this Message Board, not Great Debates.

Isn’t it a bit late for that? We’ve got over one and a half million posts already. Or, if you’re looking for the 200 000th person, rather than posts, you’ll be waiting a while, as we only have about 15 000 members now.

I’m assuming that gorewonfla either misread or mistyped the number of posts. We a few months to go to reach post number 2,000,000. (Post #1,000,000 was back in December.) One thing that is a bit misleading though is that the post count on the main page doesn’t match the actual max post id – due to deletions, I guess. For example, Chronos’s post id is 1538915, but the main page has (or just had) a post count of 1439547.

Yes, the database assigns a unique, sequential ID to each post. If posts are deleted, then these IDs are not updated.

I meant the 200,000th post in the Great Debates forum

Then you’ll have to account for all the deleted posts and threads, as well as threads that were moved to GD from somewhere or from GD to somewhere.

The first two alone will make it impossible to be able to find the 200,000th post when it’s actually posted. There have been enough deletions (100,000, by my count) that the 200,000th actual GD post might have come and gone.

And even if you ignore that, the only way to know when the count passes 200 000 is to keep a close eye on the forum listing, and check as soon as it rolled over. The mods don’t have access to any tools to make this easier.
