I was just posting this week’s new recipe to the Ultimate Recipe Thread when I noticed that the post number was over 990,000 (990,693 to be exact).

All we need to do is have each of the +10,000 members post once and we’ll be over the top for One Million posts. I know that someone tried to do this with the “Lets Take It To A Million Posts” thread, but as of now we are actually within striking range.

Finally, the bigger question;

(No, not about my sanity…)

Mods, will the millionth poster get a coffee mug or T-shirt or something like that?

Please continue to reply with the time and date of your post numbers to this thread so that we can all go on a posting frenzy when the special moment nears. The winner will obviously have to have a special congratulatory thread all to their self. So here goes:

Uhhh, where do you find the post numbers? And aren’t the times and dates listed at the side of each post?

The post number will appear in the address window at the top of your screen at the time that you post. If you click past it you run the risk of losing the post ID#. An example of a post number appears below.

All you need to do is to capture this number and then add the time and date code from the actual post.

If we can do this on a daily basis, we will be able to extrapolate when the likely moment will arrive. I wish there could be some way to profile the server activity at that time. Methinks there would be one helluva spike in posting rate.

“909894 posts in total” is what the forum page reads. This is strange, because the post ID#'s read a lot higher.

Mods, any answers to this conundrum? I assume it has to do with pruned threads or the like. What is the verdict here. Does the post number or the forum page post count reflect the true post number status?

The post counts are off because some have been deleted over the years. Also, lots have been lost in various software upgrades.

OK, so which tally should we go by? The post with ID# 1M or the post that actually brings the board total to 1M?

Um. I’m posing here, but have no idea what post number this is.

I say go with the board total on SDMB main page. That way all can see the one million any time and not just when you post. Plus, both would be over one million and there would be no argument about over or under.

By my calculations, then, Post #1,081,005 will be the 1 millionth cumulative post on this board.

Maybe we can celebrate both. I don’t see why we shouldn’t.

Although I think the “board total” (on this page: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/ )would be more official, considering we’d have 1M posts in memory.

Then again the “ID#” would signify the millionth post to transact.
