What’s the longest you went without speaking to anyone?
I was playing two truths, one lie with some people in my office and Aborigine said that when he was high school he felt isolated because of his race and didn’t speak to anyone for until the very last year of school. That came as a surprise because he seemed like an average person.
I would either say that he was using that as his lie, or that he was taking some pretty liberal definitions of “not talking to anyone.”
It is literally (yup…using the L word) impossible to go 3 years in high school without speaking a word to anyone. Even if you don’t count being called on in class/presentations.
You have to have partner projects are we counting that? Ok let’s not count partner projects
What about if someone says “hey you’re in my math class right? Did we have to find the circumference or the radius of number 30?” Well you can answer but I guess you aren’t VOLUNTEERING to speak to anyone so I guess we won’t count class assignments
What about the mean people? Surely the school assholes will force you to say or do something or I guess we aren’t counting forceful interactions that aren’t about school either…
How bout the other side of the coin? What about the people who see the loner and have the inclination to make friends with them? So then people are actively trying to help but you’re ignoring them so the onus is on you.
I do not know “Aborigine” but I did know one guy that did not speak for nearly a year in HS. Even when called upon he would just smile and shake his head. When I did finally get him to talk to me he seemed perfectly normal but painfully shy.
I did have friends in high school, although my senior year wasn’t as good about that. But, even if I discounted talking to my friends, I still had to talk in class. I don’t see how you could get by without that.
