Forced to emigrate to a new country: where do you go and why?

Spain, because I have a standing offer, and I think Barcelona is the city I like best besides my own.

I’d say New Zealand or Canada.

England- I have lots of family there but I don’t know if it’d be a great place to live if you were broke.

Canada

Netherlands

Ireland, I think. Lady Chance has family there (her dad was an immigrant to the US). Given her background in software development and my web publishing interests we should be able to hit the ground running.

the UK, where I have family and friends already.

I believe I’d remain and become part of the Harem of Unusual Size.

And soon **Anaamika **and I would rouse the rabble and we’d assassinate our liege in an orgy of maple syrup and breasts. And then we’d rule as co-queens in a peaceful utopian gynochracy and unfreeze all your assets, taking as little as 35% in taxes.

Or…Bali.

Oh, cool, I get to leave Switzerland! And I have a good excuse!

Uhm… not particularly “at home” here, why?

If that dastardly Fabulous Creature invaded Spain, I might give Costa Rica a try. I had a job there a couple years back that left me with some good contacts, I speak both Spanish and English, and although the weather isn’t good for my health (specially when you add 15C inside to the 40C outside), well, I might be able to get my own office and set the A/C at more-reasonable temperatures  Getting the work permit should be easy.

Another option is Italy: there’s enough of an industry both in Chemicals and Consulting that my CV should be appreciated, I wouldn’t need a visa or work permit unless Spain got kicked out of the EU and language is not any kind of real issue. I’ve seen ads in monster.es specifically stating “Italian not required, you’ll pick it up in no time and anyway we can always talk in Itagnolo.” And they’re serious ads.

What’s the Spanish Riviera?

Wales…for the sheep of course

Or The Duchy of Grand Fenwick

U.S.

I have a passport (born in the US), I know the language, and I’ve got marketable skills (SW engineer) – all I need is for a kind doper to put me up (and put up with me!) for a week or two until I get a job and my first pay-check.

Italy. I am not an adventurous person by nature, so Italy would be my choice because I have already lived there while on a short-term assignment for work. The familiarity would be a huge factor, I already know how to read the bus maps.

Wait, if I’m understanding this correctly, only Dopers can leave? Italy is not going to be flooded with thousands of Americans? If that’s the case, I can keep working for my current employer, only at the Italian office. That’s not too rough of a deal.

I could not just leave my country if it was invaded, I would have to start a rebellion of somekind, maybe blow something up first, and then flee if nescessary.

I would flee to the Mediterranean, steal a sailboat, a hammock and a talking parrot, and live happily ever after on this vast frutti de mare. No contry in special, but just sail around and feast on local wine and seafood. Mmhhh…
