Yeah, it started snowing here about 15 minutes ago. Very fine flakes so far, with no wind to speak of. We’ll see how things develop, I suppose.
Whee, lots and lots of snow in Portland! This is the most snow we’ve had at once since I moved here twelve years ago. It’s been coming down like gangbusters–for example, here’s what it looked like two days ago on the 18th and here’s thesame shot taken about five minutes ago. We were out playing on that street an hour or so ago and our footprints are pretty much filled in now. All I have to say is that I’m damned glad I paid attention to the weather and stocked up on everything a week ago. Since Himself has one of those heinous commutes to work (there can be traffic when the dogs decide to stop in front of him to stretch, don’tcha know!) and I’m rocking the unemployment there could not possibly be a better time, for us at any rate, to have a ginormous snowstorm!
I am quite a bit more concerned about tomorrow when it’s supposed to turn to freezing rain because ice storms are scary as hell. We’re also looking at some badass winds out of the Gorge tonight, since I live on the East side it gets pretty hairy out here on the flanks of Mt Scott, nothing much to break the wind between us and the river. They’re talking gusts up to 60mph, and when it’s also in the teens for temperature things can get verrrry ugly!
Here’s something fun–a slide show of a sliding car pileup out in NW Portland that looks like the work of the most deranged valets ever whelped. This is why I’m so glad I live on the flat side, and I’m wondering how all the folks at the end of Johnson Creek Rd are faring–it was a Street of Dreams and the houses are built on a hill with the access road at a 16% slope. WTF were they thinking?
I hope that doesn’t mean you’ll lose your power for five or more days like we just did. If you don’t post for a while, I guess we’ll know why.
One of my co-workers LOVES the snow! She thinks those of us who do not are weird. She’s been singing “Let it Snow” all week.
I think, if I catch her praying for snow again, I will swat her with an icy mitten.
I’m praying we don’t lose power now. And that I can get home from work today in one piece.
It’s been snowing here since 1:00 this afternoon with no let-up. It’s also very cold. It was 14 here this morning, and “warmed up” to a whole 23 degrees by 2:00 this afternoon.
I have to pick my daughter up from work at 10:00 tonight. Fortunately, it’s a short drive, but I still just want to bundle up and stay home.
CITY SUGGESTS STOCKING UP TODAY BEFORE THE STORM
Dec 20, 2008
THE CITY OF VICTORIA AND THE CAPITAL REGIONAL DISTRICT MAY BE UNDER A FOOT OF SNOW IN THE NEXT 36 HOURS.
10-15 CM IS EXPECTED TO FALL TONIGHT WITH ANOTHER 5-10 TOMORROW WITH WIND UP TO 90 KM PER HOUR THIS EVENING.
KATIE JOSEPHSON, WITH THE CITY OF VICTORIA IS RECOMMENDING THAT YOU GO OUT TODAY AND GET YOUR BASIC NEEDS TO WEATHER THE STORM.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PLENTY OF GROCERIES TODAY AS THERE MAY BE DISRUPTIONS TO TRAVEL…
…and so on. I’m beginning to have flashbacks to the Blizzard of '96…
Yikes! Sounds like the wind is funneling right down the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward Victoria.
At least Vancouver Island shields this area a bit. I hope.
…and my internet connection keeps going out! The horror! The horror!
It is really snowing now, adding to what we already had from last week. This is starting to look darned serious. I finally went and got the shovel out… I just knew I shouldn’t have finished off the rye; I’d like a nice, warm concoction tonight. However, there is a giant bottle of vodka… but that’s not as comforting on a winter’s night as a rye and eggnog or a hot milk, with brown sugar, cinnamon and a hearty splash of rye. Damn it. And if you think I’m going out there again…
Oh, yeah–I’m carrying the emergency pager for work this weekend as a favour to a co-worker. No drinking to excess.
I’m having coffee with French vanilla cream and coffee liqueur.
It’s really windy here- with a lots of fine snow. I’d hate to be caught out in it.
The internet told me I could put vodka in hot chocolate.
The internet was right.
Now, pager, be silent. Silent.
Do you mean “Dangerous Jim”? That’s what the local firefighters call him. He tends to get in the way.
I’ve been watching the snow fall for hours. It actually is a pretty heavy storm. The “80 miles/hour winds” appear to be about 20 MPH, but there have been moments when I couldn’t see the house across the street, even with the street lights on.
Hubby has a 40 miles drive (Seattle to Auburn) at 4:00 AM. He drives an F150 4wd, so he should be fine… As he keeps telling me, he’s a professional. Of course, all of his fire engine driving has been here and in California. :dubious:
I have a nest in front of the fireplace, with a book, 3 cats and a blankie. I’m set. Snow on.
Power is underground. Which doesn’t really help if the substation gets a crapload of aluminum roof in a tornado, which happened a few years ago. It was out for like 5 days. I was trying to cook on the gas grill.
It is still snowing, steady and constant and fairly heavy. The geraniums are not going to overwinter this one. The palms should bounce back, though, they’re surprisingly tough. Seeing palms buried in snow is kind of sad. I had some other flowers that were still blooming in early December, I guess they’re over now!
It’s beautifully quiet out and there’s that certain light from all the snow on the ground. It’s not dark out, and it’s lovely.
I’m right by Lake Washington, and it looks like we got another 4 or 5 inches last night. I expect people at higher elevations would have gotten more.
I got to drive home from the wedding at about 6:30 last night, from the Mt. Baker neighborhood. It was a little tense-making, but ended up fine. Church is cancelled this morning, since I don’t imagine there’s a safe way to get up to Capitol Hill. We have about 4-5 new inches here in Interbay/Magnolia.
I have a little bit of work to do today, but otherwise I think it will be a cozy, do-nothing day!
We’ve got about 10 inches where I am. When I let the dog out to potty this morning, the snow crunched when he walked. I’m thinking we may have gotten a very small shot of the freezing rain.
However, nothing is dripping or melting. I’ll be curious to see if we get more snow today or just the rain. Frankly, I wish it would just dump a metric buttload so I wouldn’t have to go to work tomorrow.
I’m 3 blocks from the lake shore, (west side) we too have about 6 inches. We got up, as expected, at 4:00 AM. I went out and scraped the windows and swept the snow, then started the truck, when I got back inside, hubby was on the phone, calling in sick. I guess I’ll be sharing my nest.
Would that be a European or African metric buttload?
I’m estimating that we got about 4" here in Teh Armpit with the same shot of freezing rain. Confused the hell out of Oscar the Pug — it seemed firm at first, but as soon as he put any weight on his paw he was up to his belly.
So, where exactly is Teh Armpit? Would that be Tacoma?
I live on South Hill.
