Yeah, I didn’t think it was that bad, either. I’ve been an Obama fan since his senatorial election, but, to me, Clinton came about as close to a concession speech last night as I had expected her to. Yes, classy would have been outright conceding, but her speech yesterday didn’t strike me as particularly demonic or crazy. It just seemed weird to me, since the opening of the speech was very praising to Obama, and she seemed pretty damn aware (to me) that she’d lost the nomination, and then she got into some very half-hearted (once again, to me) rah-rah “the fight goes on” type rhetoric. There was no indication to me that she really believed she had a chance.
From a prestige standpoint, being the Vice President is nice. Doubly nice given that she’d be the first female Veep, etc.
From a political influence standpoint, I suspect almost any politician would rather be an extremely influential Senator than a VP.
Just out of curiosity, why did 4 and 5 get moved and 3 gets to stay?
“And they shall be sent swordless, to Palestine.”
How about SCOTUS for Clinton?
Maybe we just need an even bigger fork!
I watched McSame’s speech (and it was pure comedy gold the way his “breaking news” moment was cut off mid-word to the announcement that Obama’d won the nomination) in front of the most lackluster, apathetic and lilywhite bunch that New Orleans could possibly muster, then caught Hillary’s dog & pony show, then watched Obama’s speech.
All I have to say is that McSame is a crouton (we left toast looooong ago!) and that even though I thoroughly detest the delusional nonsense Hillary’s been spouting I have to admit she’s good. We’re going to need that pitbull attitude and never say die approach in the next few years. She has a place in politics–preferably one where Crazy Bill has no purview! There is no doubt that her stubborn refusal to accept reality has sharpened the Obama campaign markedly, and her crazy math approach is something we’ll be seeing plenty of from Grampy Shouts-At-Clouds and the MSM over the next five months so it’s good Obama knows how to show it up for the BS it is.
And DAMN but Obama’s speech was something! That man has more class in his little fingernail than any fifty politicians from the last fifty years. He drew a clear line of distinction between McSame-As-Person and McSame-As-Candidate, and spanked him soundly for his assholery. He was gracious as hell to Hillary. I love the way he never says “I thank my wife/family” but always name checks Michelle and his daughters–that’s just cool. I’m not ashamed to admit I teared up multiple times during that half hour…
Bottom line is that the Obama/Clinton fight has focussed the entire nation and made it clear that the Democratic race IS the race–and the right guy won it. Hillary’s crazy ass supporters will come around because there can’t be THAT many old women so batshit insane as to vote for such an incredibly anti-abortion dickhead as McSame who’ll doom their daughters and granddaughters into reproductive slavery. Nobody wants their grandchildren to die like dogs in Iraq for the next century. They’re butthurt right now, and I understand that, but they’ll come around–especially if we make it easy on them.
Like the man says, we’re Americans FIRST! Let’s not ever forget that.
There’s really only one phrase that can be used here: Bitch crazy.
I was watching CNN last night, and the release of tension among all the contributors was palpable. (“Tsk. Anderson, you’re not my boo.”) I don’t recall her name, but one mentioned that she received an email from a Clinton supporter that said (paraphrased) “You’ve got to understand, this was supposed to be her night. You’ve got to give her some time.” Jeffrey Toobin says, “WHAT? What does that even MEAN?!” I think that was the catalyst for the “deranged narcissism” comment. I’ve gotta say, it was refreshing seeing some journalists call some bullshit. Wish they did it more often.
It was supposed to be her night. Amazing. That phrase doesn’t make her seem like a tantrum throwing child at all. With supporters like that, who needs an opponent?
As far as whether Obama will lose a large number of votes from Clinton’s voters, CNN was reporting exit polls last night that suggested he’d get at least 50% or so from Montana and South Dakota. I’m not sure whether he would or not–it could go either way. I do suspect that his running mate could easily be a woman, but capitulating to Clinton’s whining would definitely give McCain an opening to attack (Look, he couldn’t even stand up to his opponent in the primary–how will he fare against Hamas and Al Qaeda?!) and wouldn’t bode well for governing, either. He’s far more adept at persuasion and compromise than she is.
He doesn’t need to deal with The Clinton Show while in office–he needs a VP he can trust to back him up, to play second fiddle, and to perform the other duties of the VP, let alone the wild card of Bill Clinton. (What the hell happened to him in the past 8 years, btw? Maybe he was always like this and I missed it because I was young? He was bitching because Obama got uncommitted Michigan delegates and a few of Hillary’s. He said something like, “Not only did they give him the uncommitted delegates, which weren’t his, they were for Edwards and others–they decided ‘hey, let’s give him a few more!’ just to shut 'em up.” Shut *them * up? You’re effing kidding, right? I saw this on CNN, and of course I can’t find the video now. I’ll keep searching, but if someone can back me up on this or correct me, I’d appreciate it. I saw it yesterday around noon, I think. Maybe between 10 and 12. Whenever I ate lunch.) Can you imagine Bill throwing one of his latest fits with Hillary as the VP? That’s not what the VP’s spouse is supposed to do. The VP’s spouse 1) is supportive of the VP personally, 2) maybe takes up a cause quietly, and 3) sits down and shuts the fuck up.
A concession speech that doesn’t actually come out and concede point blank is passive aggressive bullshit. I do think it was a concession speech, though, and when she was saying “I’ll make no decisions tonight,” she was implying that she doesn’t know what to do with her political career as a whole, not that she’ll contest the nomination. I also think “share your thoughts with me,” was her way of appeasing her voters and showing that she’s not going to abandon the country, no matter what she does. Those comments would have been far more innocuous, though, if she had actually come out and conceded the nomination–they would have been colored in the light of “She doesn’t know whether to want the VP slot or not. She doesn’t know whether to want a cabinet slot or stay in the senate or not,” instead of “Wow, she’s going to try and take the White House by force! What the hell is she doing?”
You’d think as a politician she’d be more aware of the context of her remarks, but I guess not.
I don’t think that would fly, at all. She’s too polarizing and too many people would fight her nomination for that post tooth and nail.
Secondly, and related to the first point, while there have been a number of politicians who have been elevated to the SCOTUS and done excellent work there (Taft comes to mind) I’m not sure that’s possible, in today’s climate. Having at least some judiciary experience is seen as a necessity these days. Which I don’t think Hillary has any. That would give all the people from my first objection a pretty strong hook to hang their opposition on.
Just re-watched the Obama St. Paul speech. I hope Hillary watches it and feels the shame she deserves to feel for her slap-in-the-face non-concession speech. (not to mention her hideously negative campaign trying to tear down a guy like him)
And I don’t care how many voters she claims in her army, she is not worthy of sharing a ticket with Obama.
It sort of requires some judicial experience to be a serious possibility.
“For the love of God, Montresor!”
She’s enabling other delusional psychotics as well. Rush Limbaugh today told his audience that her refusal to concede was evidence that the hoax Michelle Obama video is authentic, and she’s just waiting for it to surface. God, that’s two douches in a pod. He also is apparently behind some sort of campaign to register his listeners on her website and have them leave hateful posts about Obama.
The next time Clinton sets up a speech, let’s have Obama drive that on stage, lift her up with it, and carry her off to the dumpster.
IIRC, it used to be not uncommon for politicians to be appointed to the Court.
Two words: Warren Court.
But I tend to agree with those who say that time has come and gone.
I think you’re right but if someone knows the last person to make the Supremes without judicial experience I’d be interested. Seems in recent history the appointments have all been judges.
I agree, too. And further, if any Democratic politician were to be nominated to the Supreme Court, can you imagine one LESS likely to be approved than Hillary Clinton? The Dems probably won’t have 60 Senate seats next year, so it’d get fillibustered anyway, but even if it went through, it’d be the equivalent of declaring war on the GOP. Not exactly the image that Obama has been courting to this point.
Gah. That just goes to show. There is absolutely nothing to be done with this hideous cow. Jesus, she’s like the 1,500 pound woman that’s squatting on everybody’s shoulders.
Actually, the Vice President does not “serve at the pleasure” of the President. It is not a subordinate position. The Pres has no power to remove the Veep from office or give orders. The Veep can thumb their nose at the Pres, who can do nothing about it, other than thumb back. Of course the Veep has few powers of their own and the Pres can virtually eliminate the Veep’s influence on policy. But that’s different than serving at the pleasure.
The Veep actually has to be nominated at the convention by delegates too. They don’t technically have to ratify the candidate’s choice. They always do, but technically they could nominate somebody else for Veep if they wanted to.
