Formula 1 2022

Glad the break is over. Spa, my favorite race. Nice gravel trap at La Source. This ought to be fun…

 Yeah, that was pretty Goddamn funny! I think the announcer thought if he said it enough, someone might believe it.

I predict no fewer than 4 cars in the gravel at the start of the race tomorrow. Maybe a Red Flag. Who’s with me?

Sainz and perez and ocon aaaaand, let’s say Latifi, maybe?

Verstappen in first place after starting at the back of the grid. I’m starting to think this kid might be alright. Don’t like him, but he’s fast.

So it turns out there were no turn 1 incidents, which I guess means that, in previous years, drivers who went off weren’t avoiding collisions, they were just looking for an advantage.

Amazing, isn’t it? Make Track Limits a race-ending transgression, and these guys can manage to stay on the track.

But here’s the difference between him and Hamilton, who I think is every bit as talented, probably more so.

Hamilton ran into Alonso in lap one and destroyed his own car. Alonso had some choice words for him. But later on, in an interview, Hamilton admitted it was his mistake, he didn’t see Fernando, and when the interviewer was about to quote Alonso to him, he stopped her and said he didn’t want to talk about what he said, and repeated that it was his error. I call that good sportsmanship.

Can you imagine Max doing that in a million years? He’d go to his grave insisting Alonso hit him. Whiny little bitch.

So you’re angry at Verstappen for something he did in your imagination?

No, I’m not angry at all. Like @Chisquirrel, I just don’t like him.

I think Verstappen’s behavior since he’s been in the sport makes it clear that despite his talent, he is an entitled jerk who doesn’t take responsibility for his own mistakes and blames everyone but himself for anything that happens to him. He pays a lot of attention to mistakes he thinks other drivers have made but haven’t been properly penalized for. I’ve never heard him say anything complimentary about another driver.

He’s the opposite of a good sportsman and he doesn’t have a likeable personality.

I saw that, and it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I can’t remember exactly how Hamilton phrased it, but when the interviewer started to quote Alonso, Hamilton said something like “I don’t care what he said.” I remember it came across as rather dismissive. I give Hamilton credit for acknowledging his responsibility, But he seemed a little short-tempered and disrespectful, too.

Alonso made a comment over the radio, right after the incident, about how Hamilton only knew how to start first and lead the whole race. The interviewer was looking for a reaction to that comment. I’m guessing Hamilton knew exactly what was happening and refused to take the bait. I don’t blame him.

Yeah, that was Hammy’s best moment, in my opinion. I still think he is a whiny bitch, just like Max. And I totally agree with what Fred said, but Louis played that soundbite correctly.

Interesting race. Max had to work hard for this one. But mostly I can’t help but notice that Hamilton got screwed by a safety car yet AGAIN again again.

The Safety Car giveth and taketh away.

Jeez, Ferrari is becoming an embarrassment. I’ll bet Carlos is drinking heavy tonight.

It seems really odd to me that the safety car leads the whole field down pit lane, and someone would change tires. In theory, the following cars could all be nose-to-tail. The car that stopped for tires couldn’t safely leave their pit box until the whole field had passed. It seems like that strategy relies on one of the following drivers being inattentive and leaving enough of a gap for the pitting car to merge into.

If that situation happens again in the future, will the drivers decide to close up so much that the pitting car can’t possibly rejoin until the end of the line?

But that’s only the case in the pit lane and the pit lane has a speed limit. If you tried to close up on the car in front you’d get a penalty. I personally think the pit lane speed limit should also be reduced when there’s a safety car or VSC so the advantage of pitting is reduced in these situations. Though it can spice the races up a lot, so from an entertainment POV they should probably leave the rule as it is.

Sure, but if there’s a minimum distance between cars when following a safety car, then a car changing tires shouldn’t be allowed to pull into that gap.

The situation doesn’t arise very often, but it seem to me that when a safety car has to lead the field through pit lane, tire changes shouldn’t be allowed, or a car that stops for service is forced to rejoin at the end.

This sounds sensible to me. When the field is forced to run down pit lane, it should be considered ‘Closed’ and all the crew should retreat into the garage.

But sensible doesn’t really cut it in F1.

Ferrari on Pole in Monza. I’m almost afraid to see how they are going to fuck this up tomorrow.

Oh, the usual way…bad strategy calls/reliability issues/leclerc straight up blowing it into one of the chicanes…
