Formula 1 2022

I know; just wanted to cite a little-known bit of F1 history.

With all the new circuits being added to the F1 calendar, there must be some that are getting dropped. I’m a little concerned that the sport is potentially burning more bridges than they’re building. Suppose Las Vegas spends a fortune to build the facilities for a race, and the race only runs for a few years before some other city takes its place. I suspect there are still people in Indianapolis who don’t think very highly of Formula One.

Money talks. Bullshit walks.

No, he’s always like that. In that race he was complaining that Leclerc was crossing over the pit entrance line, a minor infraction. He kept complaining, and eventually his engineer said, “Let us worry about that, you just keep your head down.”

I’m sick of his entitled crybaby attitude.

Here you go:

Some circuits will probably switch to hosting once every two years. I heard a suggestion that Paul Ricard might meet that fate. I personally wouldn’t mind as it’s quite a boring circuit, though the last race there was decent.

I lived in Vegas. I’ve been to Vegas many times since I moved away. I can’t help but think a Vegas F1 race will result in a very pretty, but monumental Clusterfuck for everyone involved. Smaller scale disaster of the Rio Olympics.

For years everyone complained (and probably still does) that Hamilton whines and complains all the time on the radio. I’m convinced everyone whines on radio, but Sky chooses who they want to make the story.

How so? While I’m sure there’s some corruption in all governments, waking up to the news of an F1 race in Las Vegas isn’t the same as the World Cup to Qatar, or Brazil and Russia getting World Cups and Olympiads.

Not suggesting anything like that, but more like terrible traffic, major hassles for lots of business and locals, crappy and compromised track layout, poor spectator amenities, possibly poor driver safety (where is the run-off area gonna be?? It’ll be like Saudi Arabia again!), lots of red flags.

Like I say, it will be a specticle, but a crappy one.

Look, we’ll never be able to do anything if we worry about the peasants.

There’s complaining and there’s whining. Although you are right that we don’t hear all the coms to compare, and the broadcaster chooses the juiciest ones to air, Max seems more concerned about trying to catch out other drivers on rules “violations” and talks more often about being treated unfairly than most other drivers.

To me, Hamilton appears a much better sportsman in interviews, less likely to blame other drivers, and while on the track, more likely to be critical of his own team.

Are they going to jump some fountains? That’s the real question.

Nitpick: it’s not Sky but FOM who cover the race - the same for everyone in the world. Whilst nitpicking is annoying it is relevant here because the race coverage is not created by a British broadcaster catering to a British audience.

Although you might well find yourself listening to Sky’s commentary on top of that coverage.

Anyway, Sky does not control which team’s radio you get to hear during the racing.

Something discussed upthread and for the avoidance of doubt. Mick Schumacher did specifically request the MSC designation as a tribute to his father who used it most of his F1 career.

Although honouring his father was THE reason there is another Schumacher in motorsport. Mick’s uncle Ralf (Michael Schumacher’s brother) has a son David. David’s open wheel career seems to have stalled in F3 and he has switched to DTM (German Touring Cars) this year but there’s still time for David to join F1.

Very entertaining season so far, but it seems like the fuel formula change has totally neutered the Merc engine. Combine that with AMG-Merc’s inability to get on top of porpoising, and I’m surprised they are as competitive as they are. Still, it was a gut punch to see Lewis fail to make it out of Q1 in Jeddah. Considering Red Bull are typically the kings of in-season development, and Ferrari tend to gradually ruin their cars as seasons progress, I suspect Red Bull will ultimately run away with both championships this year.

As far as Max goes, he’s fantastically entertaining to watch, but he’s a dirty driver (part of the reason he is so entertaining) and very, very whiny.

Interesting article…

I was watching the practice from Australia. Is this the first F1 track to have bicycle lanes?

The track limit rules are going to be tricky with those lanes.

The on-board camera shots are a bit, well, unreal. Maybe it’s just me, but they almost look like a video game.

Pirelli may introduce a gravel tire for the race.

Video games look like it.

Some observations immediately after the Australian GP:

  • Charles Leclerc is officially the one to beat this season.
  • Red Bull still appear to be having problems with their car. Too bad for Max. At least Checo made up for it.
  • George Russell on the podium! Hamilton must be frustrated.
  • Alex Albon went the entire race without changing his tires. He only went into the pits on the last lap and still managed to get P10. Go Williams!
  • Not a good outing for Aston Martin in general and Sebastian Vettel in particular. Lance Stroll is the new Nikita Mazepin.
  • McLaren seems to have solved their problems, just in time for the race at DannyRiccland.
  • The cars are definitely following each other much closer than before. Some great midfield action.

They didn’t have a different car, the track just suited it more. Which is good news in that some circuits will be okay for them but they still need to sort those issues out.
