Formula 1 2024

Yep. I’m with ya.

Is Danica there on the Sky coverage? That might stop me.

No. Not during practice or sprint qualifying, at least. We’ll see what the rest of the weekend brings though.

I suspect she’ll be there tomorrow and/or Sunday. During the sprint qualifying, I heard Martin Brundle mention taping a segment to air before the race, and that Danica was in it.

Great result for Danny Ric in the sprint! Let’s see how qualifying goes this afternoon.

I’m not a huge Lewis fan, but boy did he get done hard by.

Mag needs a good banning. He has always driven like shit, and his facial hair is a crime against humanity.

I’m pretty unhappy with that horrid shade of blue on the Ferraris. Enzo would not approve, I think.

Apparently he was protecting Hulk again. And there’s speculation that he’ll get a few more points on his super license.

This guy doesn’t belong in F1. He needs to hang it up and go become an Indycar Champion.

Did I miss it or did they not show the onboard camera from Stroll? I’m not sure exactly what he thought he was doing. Maybe he didn’t either.

I can’t believe how much “wall bouncing” went on at this track and didn’t end in catastrophic carnage from shattered suspension components. But tomorrow is a new day!

YES Lando !!!

Anyone else see Lando’s post-race interview? “Fuck! Sorry!”

Are the rules for contact during a pass published anywhere? How far alongside a car do you have to be before that car has to leave you room?

Woohoo! Go lando! I’m equally happy for lando winning as I am for max not winning!

IIRC, it’s your front axle pats their rear axle, at least for most racing leagues.

My question: will Magnussen ever face actual penalties for his driving? He’s making Gasly’s run at picking up penalties seem quaint.

That’s what inspired me to ask my question. Magnussen was clearly alongside Sargent, and Sargent pushed him almost completely off the track. When they did make contact, it was the back of Magnussen’s front wheel to the front of Sargent’s rear wheel, so it was front axle ahead of rear axle.

It seems most people are desribing it as clearly Magnussen’s fault. Am I missing something?

For this section (turns 2 and 3), to be given space, you need to be alongside at the apex of turn 2. Magnussen essentially tried to dive bomb around the outside into the inside of turn 3. The steward decision is pretty clear on the reasoning.

For single corners, the rule is:

  1. For being inside, you must be alongside before the turn into the corner, thus being given room on the apex;

  2. For being outside, being alongside at the apex, thus being given room on the exit.

It’s a convoluted mess that is about as clear as a catch in football.

Is the stewards’ reasoning posted somewhere?

Here’s the video: WATCH: Magnussen crash with Sargeant brings out Safety Car in Miami GP as Haas driver hit with penalty | Formula 1®

If you freeze-frame it between 0:10 and 0:11, it looks like Magnussen gets alongside Sargeant (front axle ahead of rear axle) before the apex of the left-hand corner. Not by much, but he is there.

I can’t cite any other examples, but this doesn’t feel like the first time I’ve seen this. Two cars are next to each other, one of them “shuts the door” and forces the other off track (or they make contact), and it seems like the blame always goes to the car that gets forced off. I’m curious what the standard is; how much overlap does a trailing car need, and when, before the leading car is obligated to leave him room?

Kevin’s suspension is just the break Mazepin is looking for. Well, that and one more thing.
