Fort Lauderdale Dopefest in January for Anniz and Montfort

Plantation? I went to Piper. Graduated in 87.

Sani, since I won’t be able to make this meeting, take a lot of pics, ok? AND DRIVE SAFELY! I can’t believe your parents are letting you go…you are growing up so fast…::sniff sniff::

Well, definitely count in me and Tasha. We an cast a lottery or something to decide which of our other friends are worthy of the last seat. But if we all promised to be good and not seduce you till we got there could you take all of us? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Piper! LOL. My boyfriend used to go there. He calls it the devil school. A couple of my other friends go there too. They say it’s the most ghetto school in the county.

Works for me. Do all the seducing you want when we get there.

And don’t worry, Michi, I’ll drive carefully as always. And besides, it’s no farther to Ft. Lauderdale than it is to Tampa.

I can’t say much about Piper, having never even seen it, except they have a pretty cool radio station. 88.5 WKPX, the only really alternative radio station around here. It takes getting used to the very unprofessional sounding high school teen DJs, but it’s well worth it. Too bad the transmitter is apparently powered by a chipmunk in a wheel.

Hey! Does that mean I could possibly con Chris into going? Then I’ll definitely have fun. Well, just as long as you don’t mind finagling in the backseat.

Piper does have a good radio station most of the time. I used to go to volleyball tournaments at Plantation when I was in club vball. These days I never set foot on that campus. That reminds me, Friday there’s a play or something at Coral Springs I wanna go to. How am I gonna get there? hmmmmm…

Wow, Piper! The love of my (high school) life went to Piper.

Anyway, the real devil school is South Plantation.

Where’d you live, Michi? In Sunrise?

(Oh yeah, it’s official: I just bought our plane tickets to go down there.)

Yes, I used to live in Sunrise. I left when I was 18 to go to college in Tampa.

I can’t believe I am going to have to miss this gathering.

I lived in Plantation in Jacaranda Lakes (Sunrise and Pine Island) until I moved to DC in '91. My senior year at Plantation High, I worked at the Winn Dixie at Nob Hill and Sunset Strip. Most of my co-workers were from Piper, actually.

I was actually a bit melancholy when I found out the WD closed a few years ago.

I do still listen to WKPX on the radio when I’m down there.

Anyway, I’m getting nostalgic a month too early. I’m sorry you won’t be able to make it, Michi, it would’ve been great to finally meet you!

Is this still a o? It looks like I will be back from Ireland on the 18[sup]th[/sup]. Therefore, I should be able to make lunch on the 20[sup]th[/sup].[sub] in all my jetlagged glory[/sub]

Yup it still is.

We just need to decide where to have it. On the beach? Out in western Broward?

We’ll be staying with my mother in Plantation, and I should have access to her car, so just about anywhere is cool.

I talked to ssskuggiii and hypergirl and they were thinking about maybe seeing an art film someplace in downtown Ft. Lauderdale (ask them for the specific theatre) and then getting a bite to eat. IIRC, however, they’re still in school this week (Ha ha ha! Er, ahem, sorry.) so we might not hear from them until later.

Ok, there’s Riverwalk in/on/near Las Olas blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale. They have a bunch of stuff to do apparently. Jess would probably know a bit more about there than I would considering Natan used to work on Las Olas and I never visited him when he did. Also, there’s this movie theater that’s kinda artsy called The Gateway. It’s really old, but they show some good movies there.

Yeah, I know the Riverwalk. That sounds like a good idea.

A movie may or may not be a good idea, depending on our schedule.

Well, Tasha and I are out of school now. Yay! More posting time! Anyways, for this dopefest thing, there is a theater in Sunrise that usually plays artsy films. My boyfriend used to work there. If we go, I advise no one to eat the popcorn (but that’s another day, another thread). Umm…or elses there is Gateway that Tasha talked about, and also the big theater on Las Olas usually has one or two somewhat artsy movies. But the tickets are like 90 dollars. It’s extortion I tell you!

The Fox, at Pine Island and 44th St., right? Great theatre. My mom and I always catch a movie there when I’m in town.

For the life of me, though, the only restaurant in the same shopping centre that I can think of is a McDonald’s. What else is near by?

Gah, I haven’t been down there in a full year, I’m starting to forget things. (In the grand scheme of things, that’s a good thing…)

Congrats on finishing school for the millenium, hypergirl and Tasha!

Yep. You’re exactly right. It’s Fox. And you’re exactly right. The only restaurant is McDonalds. Well, we could always go to Denny’s. That Fox/Denny’s combo would be way too reminiscent of last Wineter Break. Oh well. I had fun then, and I’ll have fun now.

Denny’s? By Cecil, I lived there in high school (the one at Sunrise and University).

But, it was against the law to go there during the daytime. Please don’t tell me times have changed.

[amusing anecdote]One time a year or so ago, my brother, father and I were going to a Panthers game at the Garage. For reasons only known to my father, we got there ludicrously early. They weren’t even letting people in yet. We wanted to get a bite to eat, and thought about where to go for a minute until our father suggested Denny’s. My brother and I looked at him like he was speaking Swahili and said “uhh, Dad, no.”[/amusing anecdote]

Why would you want to go to Denny’s in the daytime? I say that Denny’s peaks sometime around 2 AM.

I have no idea, you were the one who suggested Denny’s, not me.

I only went there when the sky was dark and the clock said AM. Usually between 12am and 3am.
