Since I’m getting all my Dopefests in a row (check the sig), I figured I’d bump this to try to get a more concrete plan in place.
Any thoughts on where and what, SoFla Dopers?

There isn’t really anything amusing to do down here except maybe see a nice artsy movie. Quills was very good, and I still want to see Chocolat. We still have time to make things concrete.
I still want to see quills and you missed about 10 minutes of it, Jess. I saw the ad for chocolat today on tv; damn, that looks like a good film, and even if it isn’t, it’ll mean 2 hours of Johnny Depp.
I saw Quills on X-Mas day, it was great. Chocolat sounds good, too. Will that be playing at the Fox Sunrise?
(Hmm, my mother might want to join us for that… I’m not sure I’m ready for her to meet a bunch of horny teenage Dopers, though. :p)
Yes Tasha, I know that I missed 10 minutes of it. But that’s why I want to see it again. Both of those movies should be playing at Fox Sunrise. If not, some new artsy movie will be playing. The Beatles movie, A Hard Day’s Night, is playing there too. Oh, and Drouching Dragon Hidden Tiger. My boyfriend called that movie the Chinese Matrix.
So, uh, shall we make some concrete plans for this? It looks like it’ll take me a little over 3 hours to drive over there, give and take time for gas and such, so I probably would want to get there around 12 or 1, assuming we’re doing this as a lunch and movie thing.
Are you counting time in there to pick up Tasha and I?
No, that’s the thing. 3 hours is just to get over there, then I add the time to pick you guys up and then drive down to Ft. Lauderdale. If you could give me some idea (maybe in an e-mail) as to where I should meet you and maybe give me the address of where we’re going, I can get a better idea of just how long gettin’ around town will take. But no hurry, we’ve still got 2 weeks and I have this thread bookmarked.
SanibelMan: coming from the west, Sunrise is a lot closer to you than Ft. Lauderdale is. So, if we decide to do the lunch-and-art-movie thing out in Sunrise, that’s closer for you to get to.
Although, I believe tasha, Hypergirl, and co. all live up in Deerfield Beach (right?), so that’s a ways from Sunrise. Coordinate with them.
Actually, we all live in different places. DigitalMuse, Zero Hero, and I live in Coral Springs. Tasha lives in Deerfield. I’m not quite sure where anyone else lives. But we could probably coordinate it so that we would all be in one place for you to pick us up.
Oh, okay. The three hours was up to Deerfield Beach, which I assumed was where you all lived. So adjust for time from there to wherever you think you guys can meet, but remember that I’ll only have room for three people.
Hey Jess, why don’t we just meet at Rivvy’s house and take her as our third? We won’t have to pick out of our friends who to take then. I mean, Lauren’s got her car and can take the others if she wants to go.
My trip to Ireland has been rescheduled. I will be out of the country on the 20[sup]th[/sup].
Oh well. I will lift a pint of Guinness and pretend to be meeting you. [sub]mmmmmm. dopefests taste good[/sub]
Sorry you can’t make it, spiritus. I was hoping to meet you.
Your raising a pint in Ireland (really, I can’t think of a better excuse than THAT) reminds me of a joke, which I’ll share here:
One day an Irishman moved to Australia and checked out his new neighbourhood’s pub. He walked up to the bar and sat down.
The bartender asked him what he’ll have.
With a heavy Irish brogue, he replied, “three Guinnesses, please.”
“Three? All at the same time? Why don’t you just get one at a time?”
The Irishman explained: “Today’s a sad day. My two brothers and I separated. Ryan still lives in Dublin, but Stewey’s living in America, and I’m here in Australia. So, we agreed that we’d always pretend like we’re all still drinking together when we’re in a pub, by ordering three at a time.”
The bartender nodded and draughted three for the Irishman. He proceeded to drink all three, one sip at a time from each.
This became a ritual, as several times a week the Irishman would come into the bar. Eventually the bartender just gave him his three Guinnesses without being asked; the Irishman became a regular.
One day, he came in with a very sad look on his face. He sat down at the bar, and when the bartender gave him his three glasses, he pushed one of them back.
“What’s the matter, matey? Did you lose a brother?”
“No,” the Irishman replied. “It’s not that. Stewey’s stopped drinking.”
I am a spanking brand new, wet behind the ears newbie, but I can easily ride up to Las Olas on the 20th if anyone wants to see what a true neophyte looks like! I’m only a half hour to 45 mins away in Coconut Grove.
Bill: Sure, we’d love to meet a true neophyte. It looks like, though, that we’re going to meet in west Broward, in Sunrise, rather than in Ft. Lauderdale.
Assuming that’s where we’re meeting, just shoot up I-75 to the Sawgrass Expressway where the two roads meet up with I-595 in west Broward.
Hopefully we’ll nail down specifics (lunch, anyone?) before this Dopefest actually happens in two weekends.
Bumpity bump bump bump…
Here’s to hoping I can still make it. I’ve come down with the Bronchitis of Certain Death. But don’t worry, I’ll do everything I can between now and Saturday to get better.
I’ll be up in Sunrise later in the month to see Skynyrd, it’ll be a good practice run to get there. BTW, anybody have a place to meet set yet? I’m all ears.
No freakin’ clue. I haven’t looked to see what movies will be playing at the Fox Theatre (which is at NW 44th Street and Pine Island, aka NW 88th Ave.).
Could a SoFla Doper check that? Anniz and I will be there Thursday night, but I’m not 100% confident in my remote internet access, so I’d like to have this finalised before then.
Also, where can we eat? Someone help us here!
And, Bill, make sure Satan doesn’t give your Skynard tickets away to a bunch of sailors (like he did in Norfolk).
Okay, I did some searching, and apparently the Fox Theatre is no longer called the Fox Theater. But, looking here, I see that several movies of interest are at the theatre.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for one. For those with a literary bent, The House of Mirth, starring Gillian “Scully” Anderson, opens this weekend. Also playing is Chocolat, which is supposed to be pretty good, too.
So, let’s pick a film, people. I’d like to see CTHD, personally.
