I love this feature! I cant believe I never noticed it before!
Of course I have to scroll down to the very bottom of the screen, (but what the hell) but it saves lots of time.
I know that I am stating the obvious but Holy Pancakes now I’m a topic jumpin’ maddog. Used to be that I’d click the top Straight Dope Message Board link thingy and have to start all over again.
Not anymore I can jump head first into any forum I want.
“Every time a Doper figures out another vB feature, a wee fairy is born, up in the stars…”
[sub]Here at this end, they’re still talking about the day Ducky discovered there was a link to the Home Page at the bottom, so she could go read the Column being discussed in Comments for herself without having to open a New Window, and then come right back to Comments with the Back button…[/sub]
Way back when, in the dark days before Sir Jerry saved us, using Forum Jump was a lost cause. My typical routine would be to open up the main page, then launch each forum in a new window. Eventually they would all load.
Now that the pages load at a more reasonable rate, I too am now a fan of the forum jump. If I am allowed but two quibbles about it: 1) I would also put it at the top of the page so that I don’t have to scroll all the way down to use it, and 2) I would make it an automatic jump once I selected a forum - none of this pressing the GO button for me.
Used to use the forum jump almost exclusively. Then I learned the forumid numbers. Now may favorites are set with the forum number being the first character in the name of the link. Thus, http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/forumdisplay.php?&forumid=7 is now, in my favortes list, “7 SDMB Great Debates”. With a quick tap of Alt, a, 7 I am well on my way.
IMHO and CS don’t fit well with that, but I don’t go ther emuch anyway.
I’ve also created a JavaScript enabled frames page with a text field in it where I type “GQ” or “TBBQP” and it forum jumps for me. Anything to not use a damn mouse!
