My school is going to start blocking access to Yahoo (because they basically launched an attack at us), and I would like to still be able to check my email without, you know, switching my email address here, there, and everywhere.
I poked around a bit earlier today, and near as I can tell, YahooMail will grab new mail from other accounts, and GMail will let you automatically forward any or all of your mail. Which is lovely, but the exact opposite of what I want to do. Can anyone help me?
Yes, I know that Gmail is lovely and far superior to YahooMail. However, with Yahoo I get instant mail notifications through my IM client, and I’m not sure that the Firefox extensions can really compete with that. And most importantly, I don’t want to have to change my email addresses everywhere just so I can check my mail during the daytime for the next couple months. So, please spare me the comments about how I should just switch for good?
Or if you don’t want to pay money, use an HTTP proxy. A proxy will act as a bridge between you and the website you’re connecting to.
Google “http proxies” and look around, it usually takes a few tries to find one that works. For more information on proxies, go to wikipedia.org and search for proxy.
Duckster - According to the head of tech, some Yahoo application came in and grabbed three ports on every computer in the school. Add that to another nasty little virus that hit two of the computer labs (out of the four in the school), and the tech staff hasn’t gotten much sleep this week.
SiouxChief, I barely have two pennies to rub together lately, and there’s no way I can justify spending $20 (actually, it’d be more like $40 or $60 because I want to set this up on two or three of my Yahoo accounts) just so I can goof off in class. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
I haven’t switched either and don’t plan to, not till gmail has finished with the beta thing. But for what it’s worth there is an instant notification gizmo now available for gmail. It’s here: Change email notifications - Computer - Gmail Help
How do I get Yahoo! to “grab” mail from addresses that don’t forward? That would suit me perfectly. Or is this “YahooMail” of which you speak somehow different from my bog-standard account on yahoo.co.uk?
I have the Gmail Notifier for my Account. Google “Gmail Notifier” - You don’t need the actual toolbar… there is an app just for the Gmail notification that sits in the system tray.
Ross, I’m not completely sure this works, but what I did was go to “Mail Options” from my regular inbox page, and then clicked on “Mail Accounts.” For the part where they ask for the “Mail server”, I just put in gmail.com.
Meeko, thanks, I’ll look into that.
bordelond, so did I, but I guess we were both mistaken. shrug
Not that it’s necessarily worth digging into, but can anyone else besides tech guy confirm that a Yahoo app hosed things up?
Not that anyone asked, but that sounds like the kind of thing a tech guy would say to cover a (serious) mistake of their own. I am an IT professional, but I certainly don’t know everything there is to know about the field. It’s just that my BS detector went off.
