Forza 4 Tuner thread

Inspired by my “Gutless Wonder” Forza 4 thread, I think it’d be fun if we had a thread dedicated to tuning up your cars, here’s where you can brag about the performance increases as you add to and improve your car

All tuners are welcome, those of us who like Sleepers, with all the mods under the skin and no cosmetic mods to give away the true nature of the car, all the way to the appearance mod devotees, all are welcome, this is to be a hate-free thread…

I may not like the whole “cosmetic mods” subculture, i personally may find cars modified in such a way to be very unpleasant, but if that’s what you like, go for it, and boast in pride here

This is a thread for ALL car fans, be they “Petrolheads” “Grease Monkeys”, “Car Art”, “Sleeperfans”, etc…

If you’re a car fan, no matter the type, pull up a creeper and get your hands dirty wrenching away, virtually speaking
Personally, as stated upthread, I’m a sleeper guy, I love building up a car from mild to wild, but have it look no different than stock, new rims may be as far as I’ll push it cosmetically, aside for my few “Comedy Cars”…

…Like my Ford Pinto done up in the livery of the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard, Hemi Orange, big “01” on the doors, confederate flag on the roof (for accuracy’s sake) and just because I find it hilarious, a functional hood scoop on the hood, force feeding air to the 5.0 Liter Eaton Twin Screw race supercharger and intercooler…

So, post away, have fun…

Here’s some quick off the cuff numbers for the Ford Pinto, stock and in Mini General Lee form…

All cars raced as manuals unless specified otherwise

Fujimi Kaido Section B

Stock Pinto (Automatic 3-speed) (Class F, 100 PI) 4:14
Stock Pinto (Manual 5-speed) 4:05
MGL Pinto (Class R3, 711 PI) 2:55

Toyota Aygo stock (auto) 4:35
Aygo stock (Manual) 4:14 *
EvilAygo (D class, 292 PI, manual, supercharger/intercooler/RWD swap) 3:35 **

Tesla Roaster (auto/CVT); 3:10
Top Gear Test Track “Power Lap” times;

Stock Auto Pinto; 1:54***
Stock Manual Pinto; 1:51****
MGL Pinto;
[Jeremy Clarkson voice] The Mini General Lee Ford Pinto did it in…One minute…and…Twenty…Four Seconds! [/JCV]
Yep, The Crazy Little Mini General did it in 1:24!*****

Stock Auto Aygo; 1:57******
Stock Manual Aygo; 1:56******
EvilAygo; 1:42*******
DarksideAygo (fully kitted out, maxxed out racecar shaped like an Aygo); 1:25

  • The Aygo in stock form with the manual transmission wasn’t as bad as the sluglike automatic, either I’m getting used to the quirks of this chassis or something else strange is happening here, the manual Aygo felt like it had sharper handling than the horrid automatic, maybe it was due to the stupid sludgebox putting me in the wrong gear at the worst possible time, it shifted out of the powerband just as the power was coming on and needed the most (the long lightly curved uphill climb mainly)

** With my Evil Mods in the Aygo (all the Race level chassis and driveline mods, racing slicks, largest wheels, Race supercharger, intercooler and oil cooler, I found that the EvilAygo likes to be driven like a Ferrari, it builds all it’s power on the high end of the RPM band, even though it has a supercharger, there’s only so much you can pull out of an unmodified 1 liter engine block

*** On the TGTT, the stock Pinto really showed it’s age and lack of sophistication, the suspension was soft and marshmallow-wy, it felt “floaty” through corners, the only saving grace was the ability to break the rear wheels loose and drift through the Hammerhead and Penultimate Bend, also that horrid automatic transmission has a HUGE hole in the powerband on the 1 to 2 upshift, it loses all the torque that it had been building up

**** Switching to manual allowed me to keep the engine roughly in the sweet spot of the powerband, since I was able to control how long I held it in each gear I could minimize the effects of the torque black hole on the 1-2 upshift by slightly over-revving by a couple hundred RPM, slightly redlining in that gear, it also allowed me to downshift in anticipation of corners to keep the torque curve usable, let’s just face it, the manual is just plain better, especially on underpowered econoboxes

***** Yes, the MGL lives up to it’s TERRIFYING reputation, this little Pinto-Shaped-Race-Car, because let’s be honest after all, the only original Pinto component left is the sheetmetal body panels, is a truly terrifying ride, the whole time on the TGTT, I was never above 65% throttle, and that was only on the last straightaway before the Penultimate Bend, and in that short stretch of track, I was able to get the MGL up to 125 MPH!

For most of the TGTT I had to lightly feather the throttle, if I “gave it too much welly” it would spin on me, in all honesty, the MGL feels closer to driving one of TVR’s Bits-Of-Madness-Shaped-Like-A-Car, it has a similar sadistic streak, just like a TVR, and as Clarkson so memorably put it…
“If you do one thing wrong, one tiny little thing wrong, the car will try to kill you”
"this car is constantly thinking up new and ingenious ways to kill you…

****** As with the Pinto, the manual Aygo just seemed to be tighter, sharper and more controllable, probably due to the ability of the driver to keep the engine in the sweet spot of the powerband, the chassis setup in stock form was also noticeably tighter and more rigid in the Aygo a lot firmer and better than the mushy Pinto suspension, what surprised me is how close the times between the auto and manual transmissions are, on a car this tiny and underpowered, the engine might be too anemic to really show any difference

******* Just like on Fujimi, the EvilAygo liked to be revved hard and made all it’s power on the high side of the RPM band, as did it’s close cousin, the Darkside Aygo, which was a fully race-kitted Aygo with the Celica 4 cylinder underhood, and the twinscrew supercharger and intercooler, much like my other “econobox-shaped-racecar”, the MGL, the DarksideAygo was also very throttle sensitive and wanted to groundloop if given too much welly…
(why yes I’ve been watching Top Gear tonite, how can you tell?

maybe later I’ll choose another car and document my tuning process ant thoughts behind it

So, Forza drivers, brag up your modded cars

I would really like to get into this game because it looks great and has cool cars but I’m reluctant because I truly suck at driving sims. Do you use a steering wheel when you play?

No, I use the stock controller, I’d like a wheel, but they’re too expensive

Difficulty is variable, with all the assists on, all you need to do is mat the throttle and steer, or turn the assists off for maximum realism, or anywhere in between

Assists;
Antilock brakes
Automatic transmission
Auto brake/brake assist
Traction control
Stability control
Best racing line

Turn them all on and anyone can pick up a controller and drive

First car I ever drove, other than in Driver’s Ed, was my dad’s '79 VW Rabbit. Naturally, I started messing around with the '84 GTI. I’m working in the dining room and the game is in the living room so I don’t have specs handy right now. I know it’s in Class D so far.

A yellow Pinto is also in my stable for later experiments. A yellow '71 that was originally owned by Dad would have been my first car but one of my brothers got to it before I did.

So I started messing around with the original Gutless Wonder, the Pinto.

My best time up Fujimi Stage B in the stock car was 4:05.

I tuned the little guy up to a PI of 199, which kept it an F-class car.

My first run up the mountain I turned a 3:39. That’s 26 seconds faster and still an F-class car!

Now here’s what I did and some benchmark numbers.

Race Air Filter +8 HP
Street Camshaft +10 HP
Racing Springs and Dampers
Race Weight Reduction -279 lbs
Race Tire Compound
Wider front and rear tires (two steps up from stock).

So the tuned machine comes in with 103 HP vs 85 for the bare-bones car.
But especially on this track, weight is important. The tires are stickier and wider, but I’m pulling almost 300 pounds less up that hill.

Numbers-wise, I’m rocking 21.1% more horsepower but also 12.3% less weight.

I benchmarked both cars and here’s the results:

Event Stock Tuned
0-60 13.5s 9.6s
Top Speed 100.6 108.4
Braking 60-0 139.1ft 111.1ft
Lat Gs at 60mph 0.80 1.02

The tuned car is much quicker out of the blocks and handles much better - over 1g on the skidpad!

Of course this setup will only show dramatic results on a track like Fujimi B, where it is all climbing and turning. Any track with a lot of hard braking areas and I would struggle.

Fun times, and here’s a picture of the “beast”.

Ok. So I picked up this game against my skill set. Is there a club or something I should join that will let me be on a team with the SDMB crowd?

Why yes there is

Sweet. Can you invite me? My gamer tag is beefchips

Friend invite sent

I was wrong, it’s in B.

Just took my Killer Rabbit up Fujimi Kaido Section B in 3:39.746.

FTR, I get Mac’s Class-E GTI up the hill in a hair under 4 minutes.

9:08 Seconds!..

Around the Nurburgring!..

In my Crazy Pinto!

I finally broke the 10 minute barrier on the NBR, and had a BLAST doing it, in my Ford-Pinto-Shaped-Race Car, I mean, let’s be fair here, the only Ford Pinto original parts on it are the sheet metal body panels, the headlights, taillights and grille, oh, and the windows, so the body shell is the last remaining original part

I did perform some strategic upgrades and tweaks before hitting the Ring (My Precious!..)

I upgraded Little Crazy Horse (heh, I like that name, I dub thee Little Crazy Horse!) with an AWD drivetrain, what’s this? I hear you say, MacTech, the Rear Wheel Drive fan has modded a car to AWD, who are you and what have you done with MacTech!

Calm down, let me explain, yes, I dearly love RWD cars, they have a balance and poise missing from front-drivers, but I also had one major problem with Little Crazy Horse (LCH from now on), and that was major torque steer and wheelspin from the rear tires, mat the throttle from a standing start and LCH wants to go sideways, or starts to do donuts, at the very least, he starts burning rubber like mad…

…yes, smoky burnouts look cool, no argument, but they’re also a sign that you’re wasting power, prematurely wearing your tires out, and that the car is not able to harness all it’s power efficiently

By putting the AWD drivetrain in, I was able to send all 797 HP from that monstrous Supercharged and Intercooled 5 liter V8 to all four tires, instead of simply melting the rears off their rims

However, I didn’t want LCH to lose his tail-happy, powerslide-ey (is SO a word!) character at the expense of grip, so I tweaked the AWD mechanism

factory AWD settings are a 50/50 power distro, and 50%/0% Accel/Decel lock on the front tires, 75%/75% Accel/Decel lock on the rears

I wanted to retain as much of the tail-happy character as possible, but not waste power smoking the rear tires, so with a bit of fiddling, I came up with a set of numbers that seem to be working, but still need fine-tuning

90% rear / 10% front power distro
20%/20% accel/decel lock for the fronts
75%/75% accel/decel lock for the rears

With those settings, I can still kick the tail out in corners, but the front still has a tad of understeer that was introduced with the AWD system, I’m trying to tune that out, the way I figure it, what I want is decent grip and acceleration in the straights, but I want the sharp, crisp, refined handling and tail-happy-ness that comes with a RWD platform, basically, I want the AWD to deal with the straight line acceleration, and to go away in the corners, as I prefer to steer big powerful vehicles trough the corners with the rear wheels anyway…

And since I’m a glutton for punishment…
a bone-stock Pinto does the Ring (Gollum!) in 12:41 agonizing minutes!

and more Ring goodness, yes, precious!..

Darth Aygo (my “Darkside” Toyota Aygo with all the racing upgrades and Celica engine swap, as well as supercharging and intercooling) did The Ring in 10:12…

A bone stock Aygo did it in (hold on, be back in a few weeks…) 12:51, a full 10 seconds slower

One thing I discovered from these little asthmatic Gutless Wonders?

The Ring actually has hills, they’re subtle, but there, thing is, most cars are powerful enough to be unaffected, not so with the GW’s, the three “Wheeze-Points” on the track are the approaches to the first two Carousels, and the final straight, of the two, the Pinto, with it’s more powerful, torquey motor (Dear Og does it feel weird using the superlatives “powerful” and “torquey” when it comes to the Pinto… ) was affected far less than the Asthmatic-Dwarf-Hamster-Powered (Asthmatic Dwarf Hamsters, Band Name! ) Aygo…

(this post sounds better if you read it with the voice of Jeremy Clarkson in your head, I just realized that happy fact, and so, to close on that note…)
[Jeremy Clarkson Voice] More POWWWAAAHHHH!!! [/JCV]

I’m hoping it was really

9 Minutes and 8 seconds!!!

Ford rules the Ring in an old beast!

Yep, 9:08 minutes for a complete lap from a dead stop
