FOTR (EE) movie question

I am confused and thinking I’m losing my mind. (watch your smart mouths…).

I could swear that there is some footage on the appendices that shows how they CAST the fellowship, with some time spent on showing Elijah Wood’s video that he sent in as an audition. I cannot find it anywhere on the EE version of FOTR.

It is not on the second disc which covered the Fellowship and the casting of Viggo as Aragorn. I can’t find it on the first appendix disc. Can anyone help me? Thanks

There are two versions of the extended editions. The first version, in a slip-case with several discs, doesn’t have it. The second version does have the demo, but lacks most of the extras in the first version. It was a very blatant attempt to sell the same movie twice to the same people.

Hmmm… I don’t think that can be, since I’ve never seen the 2nd iteration of the release, but have watched the first (EE) many times. I think I may have dreamed it.

But thanks!

And now I want to find a CD with the songs on it–not just the soundtrack, but the songs as well (IMS, they aren’t on the soundtrack?) I bought the soundtrack long ago but it has gone the way most things go with 3 kids–no idea where it is.

I have similar memories, el.

Do you own the standard edition of FOTR? They did have some bonus footage on that one, just not nearly as extensive as on the EE. I’m thinking perhaps it’s on the 1st, standard release.

I noticed that neither of said editions are available anymore in an official capacity (all have to be acquired via 3rd party vendors)-I didn’t expect that. Glad I got all 3 of my EE’s.

Uhm, that sounds a lot like the content of the “Fellowship of the Cast” portion of “The Appendices” (Discs 3 and 4). I know that, at the very least, the story of the how they cast Viggo is in there.

I remember seeing the scene described by the OP. It is definitely not in any of the EEs (I’ve watched them waaaay too often).

I even may have seen the scene in question (a piece about how Elijah Woods pursued the part of Frodo) on a special about the making of FOTR shown on TV shortly before the movie opened.

This is my recollection.

When FOTR EE came out I watched every single second of all the extras including all the commentary, multiple times. There were several things I was sad about not being included. Chief among them were:

Elijah Wood’s audition tape.

The demo that Peter Jackson put together to show studio heads when he was trying to get the movie made after Weinstein told him it’d have to be one movie (Jackson wanted two). The same demo that the guy from New Line watched, then turned to Jackson and said “Why does it have to be two movies?” which made Jackson’s heart sink, but then the guy said “There are three books, shouldn’t there be three movies?” Bob Shaye may have turned into a complete asshole after all the movies were released, but he did right by Jackson (and us!) at the time.

The 20-minute sneak preview reel that was shown at the Cannes Film Festival many many months before the movie was released, that caused an absolute sensation. It was the first footage anyone outside had seen, and the reel turned the “Troubled history/unknown director/what could New Line be thinking/it’s gonna bring down the studio and a lot of careers” negativity into HOLY FUCK, THIS IS GOING TO BE BRILLIANT!! buzz.

That might make sense. I think I remember when it came out some hoopla about how the 2nd set gaffa linked to was actually the theatrical and extended cuts minus the EE extras. So this footage could theoretically be on two editions, just not the one with the most extras.

damn studios…

Yes–IMS, it was a home video quality tape of Eli Woods jumping around with a toy sword of sorts. And PJ turns to the camera or interviewer and says, "we had found Frodo) or some such. Plus, there is some quick footage of Orlando Bloom in acting class as well. And Orlando is interviewed and says something about him being overwhelmed etc.

I do own the theatrical release of FOTR as well–perhaps I’ll check that out tomorrow (I could never watch the TR of FOTR again–there’s too much left out). If it’s not on that, then I must have seen it sometime on TV. I didn’t see FOTR in the theaters at all. I was busy with a small child, IMS. My daughter saw it and said the RingWraiths scared her to death. I didn’t see it in theaters until ROTK.

For someone who claims only nominal fanhood, I sure seem to watch this trilogy a lot…
Anyone know of a CD (I don’t do iTunes) that has Pippin’s Lament, the Annie Lenox song, Arwen’s song and Rene Fleming doing whatever she does (I think she sings when Gollum gets the ring and falls in Mt Doom–I’m not spoilering that)?

I actually skimmed it earlier this evening, but came up empty. In one bit about Wood taken from LOTR.net, PJ talks about Wood’s audition tape, but it’s not shown. It may be elsewhere on the disc though. Dinner was ready so I had to cut short the search.

I may have to devote a few evenings to just watching the bonus discs from the theatrical releases. IIRC, their stuff isn’t on the EE discs at all.

Aren’t those on the ROTK soundtrack? Well, I guess not the Arwen one, but I know the other three tracks are. (“The Steward of Gondor,” “The End of All Things” & “Into the West.”)

Reading this thread makes me want to go to the FOTR live concert at Radio City next month!

The Arwen one might be, because they used it to score the Houses of Healing scene, which is in ROTK. Thanks! (I didn’t want to wade through all the offerings to find the songs. I’m so lazy.)
Will watch the TR of FOTR this afternoon to find out if Frodo etc is on it.

Let me know if you find it or not!

The Arwen song is available, but only on the complete soundtrack (rather than the ‘highlights’ version that came out the same time as the movie).

Standard version tracks:
5. The Steward of Gondor (Pippin song)
16. The End of All Things (Renee Fleming Mt. Doom track)

Complete version tracks:
19. The Sacrifice of Faramir (Pippin song, plus that cool fiddle ending, cut from the standard version)
40. The Houses of Healing (Arwen song)
46. Mount Doom (Renee Fleming)

I wish I could. We seem to be missing FOTR, TR. I have found the other two, and I know I purchased all 3. I am waiting for #2 son to come home to ask him, but I know he will say, “I dunno.” All the males in this house say that. Sadly, it is true for them all as well.

Lesson learned? Never allow sons to take DVDs and watch them on the basement TV. You would think this is a ridiculous rule, but I have hunted all through our (admittedly somewhat messy) basement to no avail. I only hope he didn’t loan it out to a friend. #1 son says he doesn’t have it, but I am :dubious: about that as well. There is a chance he has it in his (horribly) messy room.
I hate losing things, which is why I became a librarian. I will keep at it (I refuse to buy it again just for this), but it won’t be today. But yes, I will let you know!

Thanks for the music info, Grendel! I will have to order it from Amazon. I really need to start using iTunes or similar, but I fear it will bankrupt me. It’s too tempting.

I was completely wrong and happy to be so! #2 son took me to the FOTR, TR version. WHY it was in the laundry room in a box used for other things, is beyond me, but it is found and I plan on watching tonight after dinner. Yay!

I am just glad we still have it.

At the time (Cannes, 2000) one of the many LOTR blogs ran a story about this, and indicated that the preview shown was just one scene from the film: in Moria, fleeing from the Orcs, teetering on the collapsing bridge, battle with the Balrog. So you’ve seen what the Cannes audience saw.

Good choice for a teaser, btw.
