MOOOOOOM did you make FCD jealous by drinkin’ out of your prize cup in front of him? I would have. I would have gone on and on about how this is my extra special cup and nobody but me can ever drink out of my special cup.
Leftover turkey ‘n dressin’ with field peas with snaps and the last of the sweet N.O.T. casserole for dindin. Yum! I have a small ham cookin’ right now to use as dindin for a couple nights. Ham is always good.
Lightning bug story, possibly apocryphal: Once upon a time, there were people whose native language was from somewhere where they didn’t have fireflies. They moved to a place with fireflies and were forced to come up with a name for them. What did they choose? Electric mosquitoes.
control-z: my brother’s digital camera seems to take really good videos. He wants to go back to try for a video in the woods. Will force him to post on youtube if he succeeds.
Whoa, KRC! Where did you grow up?
::waves at Ralf and LiLi::
Left work early because I didn’t have patience for anything else. Am greatly looking forward to a long weekend already.
We have possums, squirrels, foxes, hawks, eagles, deer and even the occasional cougar or bear wandering around here. There used to be a lot more deer and other wildlife when we first moved out here, but the area has developed so much in the last 20 years, that there isn’t a lot of area for the bigger wildlife to live in anymore.
The possums and squirrels are a constant thing in my yard; I’ve even seen a raccoon or two.
It wasn’t a great day at work; it never is anymore.
I came home to discover that hubby is sick and it seems like he may be coming down with the flu. He slept a lot yesterday and that should have tipped me off. Yesterday, I attributed it to the activities from the day and night before.
His voice is hoarse now, he’s sore all over and very tired. He told me he didn’t feel well at work and thought he was going to throw up this morning.
I guess I’ll have to play nursemaid tonight.
**FCM, **that “chalice” is something alright. It sounds like something my stupid organization would do as well.
Hmm, I guess I don’t have much else to say. Hugs and smooches.
If TomKitten does go to sleep soon, I am going to sell him for parts, even if he is adorableness on two legs. It is ten thirty. Shut up and go to sleep! I am not letting you sleep in! This sudden sleepy allergy is making me want to abandon you! Two nights ago- up between eleven and four a.m. Last night, awake about six times. Gnat woke up screaming twice. He does that. Currently, past ten and TomKitten is refusing to sleep and wants to play and is having Abandonment Issues because I have left him All Alone in his crib. Pretty soon he will wake Gnat up, and that will be lots of fun.
I need four nights in a nice hotel with no children.
Sorry your workdays are crappy, Taters. Hope things get better somehow, very soon.
And so sorry about the non-sleepy TomKitten, LiLi.
Back from another firefly walk. There were tons and tons out tonight. For those of you who haven’t seen fireflies before, and/or are interested, the Boston Museum of Science has a cool site with a virtual habitat. We also saw bats again.
Back in my cat-trappin’ days, I caught almost as many possums as I did cats. I think their jaws hinge on the back of the skull, because they would always open reallllllly wiiide for me to admire their dental work.
Before I forget…
Happy Birthday Soapy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also trapped a racoon or two…and a couple of dogs… .
My best friend’s grandson was born today - about a month and a half early. He has a heart valve problem and all 4lb 4oz of him was airlifted to Tampa for surgery. Thoughts and prayers would be appreciated.
I’m leaving for Tennessee either Wed. or Thursday. Rockwood, not Rockmont - I’m not sure where I dreamed that one up. The purrin fluffball will be going with me. I will post pictures of him when I remember how - it’s been a while.
At the cabin in Alabama last week, I walked out to have a smoke and saw a beautiful doe grazing in the front yard. We have woodpeckers, jays, cardnials (sp?), crows, hawks, Canada geese and Mallard ducks. Squirrels get all the pears from the pear tree.
I wish Thursday would get here. I want to leave already!
Hi all, and first of all, Happy Birthday Soapy! I know that by the time you read this it will be tomorrow, but the sentiment is sincere.
I have never seen fire flies, and it bothers me! Those who know me will understand if I don’t list all the critters I encountered while living in Alaska; for those who don’t know me, I lived on Kodiak Island for 22 years, and if it lives on the island (or the waters surrounding it) I have seen it, along with some that live on the mainland. Here I have seen the usual, same as Taters. I was surprised today to see a white tail doe and two spotted fawns grazing alongside I5 on the way to the Plant Farm in Arlington.
I have seen lots of bats, gotta love anything that eats mosquitoes! My best bat story is from my childhood. I was 6 years old and my paternal grandparents bought 20 acres just a couple of towns north of my current location. The property had an old farmhouse and we were spending the weekend. Now when we kids had been put to bed, we knew better that to get out of bed and bother the adults. The room I was sleeping in had a door to the attic in it, and the door was open. I have no idea why the door was open. So I was lying there, listening to the adults talk and trying to go to sleep. Suddenly my gramma’s cat jumped on the bed, and she had something moving with her. It flopped around on the bed for a minute before I decided that, consequences be damned, I was going to go out and bother the adults. It ended with my dad, grandpa and uncle flailing about the room with towels and a broom before the bat, which had recovered enough to flap about did laps around the ceiling. They finally got it and took it outside to release it, and I did not get in trouble! It is still a vivid memory.
I bought 4 very dark red Sweet William plants, a pair of snips (shears, I guess) and a tub of ladybugs and 2 egg cases of praying mantis. The bugs will be released into the garden to help with any pests, although daughter #3 is talking about keeping a praying mantis as a pet. Oh yay.
LiLi there comes a time when they will sleep through the night. Honest. I truly feel your pain, sending sleepy thoughts to the young’uns.
Probably going back to the Plant Farm tomorrow, there are some roses I can’t get off my mind, and I want to grab some more herbs. Happy Tuesday everyone!
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffienatin’ YAWN ‘Tis 70 Amurrkin out with a predicted high of only 93 and a sixty percent chance of rain, which I will believe when I see. They keep lyin’ to me about rain. :dubious:
Snakes prayers and good thoughts headed out to friend’s grandbaby and family.
I love bein’ in he pool and watchin’ the dragonflies. They are so cool! Plus they eat skeeters. I also have my “pet” lizards on the back porch. They also eat bugs I don’t want in da cave, so yay lizards! So far I have seen Liz and Ard, Ethel and Fred and Edith and Archie. Yeah I name 'em. I have learned that the smaller ones are the females. So far I have not witnessed any lizard Pr0n but no doubt I will. They will, apparently, just do it anywhere.
So, cb were you alone?
LiLi here’s hopin’ TomKitten settled down and didn’t wake up Gnat. It must be fun gettin’ little ones to settle down for the night. Not.
Ok, I need more caffiene and brekkie for rumbly tummy. Then, alas, irk purtification must commence.
You can all switch gears now and wish my husband a happy birthday!
To the actual OP: We live in farmland/rural/suburban area, so critters abound. We are surrounded by wetlands, so we gots all kinds of frogs, salamanders, tons of birds, wild turkeys, coyotes, fisher cats, foxes, deer deer and more deer.
You can sit in our yard on a summer morning and hear birds of every kind. Our backyard is fenced in, but the gate broke so it’s open. One afternoon we saw a group of turkeys following its leader along the perimeter of our fence. When it got to the corner, the leader didn’t turn, so all the turkeys just started bumping into each other in the corner. It was like that scene in Animal House with the marching band. It was the absolute funniest thing ever. Finally they all got annoyed and flew into the trees.
Did I mention bunnies and baby chipmunks? Seems like this year we a re low on bunnies and high in chipmunks. And those funky black squirrels.
gotti and swampy YES, I was alone. Although I luuuuv to cuddle, my sex drive has been ::raspberry:: lately. But I got pre-authorization from the insurance the other day to see a couple of head doctors. I finally came to terms with the fact that I’ve always been functionally crazy.
::yawn:: Sometimes I don’t like my cat, who does exactly the opposite of everything I want him to do; I’ve been awake for approximately 15 minutes, and he’s already managed to do the thing where he walks in between my legs all over the house until I feed him (and then decide not to eat it, he just hates his bowl being empty), the OH I REALLY WANT TO GO ON THE FRONT PORCH!, but now I’m going to saunter there ever so slowly while you hold the door, and now he’s laying in a houseplant again. Oh, cats!
Gonna get ready for work, I guess. The mascara I wore there has smudged really unattractively all over my eyes, so remind me to be sure to wash that really well in the shower.
In a move coming out of left field, I’m going to try today, at lunch, joining the crowd that runs in the combined office park parking lot at lunchtime. I would estimate a lap to be a half mile.
No, I don’t have any illusions of making it all the way around without walking. For now.
Morning all. More critters here than you can shake a stick at. Here being the Florida Keys. I guess the most famous would be the Key Deer. I live in the Key Deer Refuge, the Great White Heron refuge and the FL. Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Skeeters are prolific too.
I actually heard rain for the first time in months this morning.
There is an interesting Bat Tower located on Sugarloaf Key. I don’t know how to post links but if you google Bat Tower Florida Keys wiki has a good photo. It was a failed experiment.
Happy Birthday Soapy and hubby. Praying for that little baby. Don’t wanna go to irk but must. Happy Tuesday all.
We had rain last night and it was very welcome after the oppressive heat of the night before. Sunday night was so roasting I couldn’t sleep, but last night I threw the windows open as soon as I got home and the house did get a bit cooler by the time I went to bed.
I woke up about 2am and decided it was cool enough to get under the covers, at which point Ophelia decided that I really needed a snuggly feline hot water bottle.
I am having a relatively boring day at irk, my cow-irkers are being irksome and I just want to go home. Also, it’s Fat Club tonight and I am not expecting a good result at all since I’ve been off the plan for a while and just haven’t really been bothering with it. I have a new goal now though, I need to lose 6lbs in 74 days before we go off to Jamaica. That’s only so I can put the 6lbs back on again, of course, but that’s what holidays are for.
Urgh. TomKitten went to sleep at eleven. He’s still alive because he’s really cute.
Thunderstorms and the Farmer’s Market today! Whee! And I’m going out on a hot date with Attacks Things Randomly Husband this evening. Mr. Lissar will watch the kids. Mr. Lissar hates Mexican food, and there’s a really good restaurant nearby that I only get to go to every two years. Attacks Husband likes Mexican.
Going to have to talk to the student about hogging all the bandwidth. It’s a problem if gmail won’t load.
