Frasier Reboot; Threat or Menace?

News reports say there will be a Frazer reboot on something called Paramount+.

Seriously, are screenwriters just out of ideas?

At least this time they are using the same actor.

I wish them well. I hope they make tons of money. It is none of my business. It is not worth getting upset about.

But isn’t using the same actor just sort of part of the problem? It was a nice show. It had its time in the sun. Surely we can do something else.

Between broadcast, cable, and streaming, there is so much content for television that it is absolutely impossible to follow it all, even if you did nothing but watch TV 24/7. What’s one more show you’re not going to follow?

It was just an OK show in my opinion. Definitely not worth a reboot.

That said Grammer is talented and seems to have a good head for the entertainment business. So I’m guessing it will be successful.

That article seems to be confused about the difference between a reboot and a revival. They’re not the same thing at all. The article keeps using the word “reboot,” but as far as I can tell that’s not what it’s describing.

(Oh, and: It’s Frasier with an s. I only point this out because it caused me trouble once when I was searching for the show.)

Easy ratings. No broadcast show will get the kind of ratings they used to with the rest of the media alternatives included, but what you can get will come easy with a show like Frazier that has an existing fan base. It could flop anyway, and if it does it will happen fast.

I fixed the spelling of the thread title.

Although following Frasier, he’s been in a couple of series (Hank, Boss, Partners and Proven Innocent), none of which lasted more than a season. So he’s not been able to recapture the magic, which was, I think, a combination of good writing and a cast that worked well together.

And thank God it’s not “Young Frasier”.

That’s “Frahzer”.

They started shooting a pilot, but every child they got who was insufferable enough to do a convincing Frasier kept getting slapped.

Director, camera crew, Craft Services lunch lady, 20-something Script Intern… when getting repeatedly corrected by a supercilious pre-teen, none of them could resist whacking the kid’s face.

BTW, have any of the recent epidemic of reboots/revivals been worthwhile?

I believe the reboot of “One Day At A Time” was considered different enough (not just a retelling) to be good on its own, and not just mining some nostalgic fan base or built-in “brand name awareness” to attract viewers.

I watched a few episodes of it and came to the same conclusion (I liked it), but watching serial sitcoms that are written episode to episode (versus a “long format serial” with a complete story arc) is just not my bag these days.

Actually, sometimes I prefer an episodic show. One reason is that lots of the other type popped up after Lost and many of them were cancelled before resolving the big mystery.

I’ve enjoyed both the Will & Grace and Roseanne revivals. It seems like when they’re doing those, the show is so established and the fans & network are so happy to have these shows back, that the shows get a lot of leeway to be weird and really address the issues of the day. Sort of a “I wish we were able to address X while we were gone, so let’s address all of it now.”

I haven’t watched it to personally speak for its quality but Fuller House is up to 5 (!!) seasons so someone must be watching it. And that’s on Netflix where smothering three season old shows in their bed at night is basically a corporate mission statement.

Good point; I thoroughly enjoyed the “Will & Grace” revival, and some of the other revivals have been good as well- at least on par with the original series. Reboots can be kind of uneven though; I can’t say I ever have got into the new “MacGyver” or “Magnum PI” series, even though I was an avid watcher of the originals.

I imagine a Frasier revival won’t be terrible, but I will say that I hope they don’t try to somehow replace John Mahoney/Martin Crane somehow.

Right. It’s Frasier set in 2021, which may be interesting. Radio has been a falling medium (even when Frasier was out). Wonder if he’s going to focus on podcasts (and figuring out how to do that). Of course, Frasier had, IMO, one of the best Series Finales of all time. So it’s going to be interesting navigating that.

Niles Cranksets ?!
btw, if daphne’s in it, I’M IN !
