Who exactly? I don’t recall Obama ever saying we should take individual action to reduce our own personal carbon footprints. Maybe Gore’s film made some suggestions about small things we can do, but if I remember correctly, those were fairly minor changes like switching to CFL bulbs (LED bulbs weren’t around back then) and maybe driving more fuel-efficient cars. Certainly nothing approaching “don’t fly overseas”.
Just as the US healthcare crisis will not be solved by individual doctors voluntarily treating the uninsured for free, so the looming global environmental catastrophe will not be averted by a few people voluntarily reducing their personal carbon footprint.
You, personally, should do something. You should vote for a government that will enact sensible policies with respect to the environment.
Yuu don’t have to, but you may wish to. I drive fuel efficient, low emitting cars. I buy alternative “green” energy from my electric company, and I have upgraded by large appliances to more efficient ones. I am under no illusions that this will stop global climate change, but perhaps will constitute a small step in making greener choices more economically viable. I still fly to Europe every chance I get and putter around in my yacht. So, perhaps I’m a fraud too.
If everyone spent the next few years laughing at the current government, and then elected a sensible one, that would achieve a whole lot more than a bit of extra voluntary recycling. And you’ll buy an electric car along with everyone else, not because you’re a do-gooder, but when there’s a phased-in 300% tax on gasoline to reflect its true cost.
