I find this assertion to be too limited. Viktor Orban has likely paid many of them as well. Think bigger! 
Has Jill Biden and the title Dr. been mentioned? Because I have heard MANY PEOPLE! Believe me, MANY PEOPLE complain about that.
If it’s true, it meant that Falwell employed writers to craft his opinion pieces, and they thought it was appropriate for him to demonize children’s show characters. If not true, he thought it was appropriate to demonize children’s show characters until the backlash.

You would think that, given how, let’s say, unimpressed he was with someone misusing his name, he’d figure out that maybe, just maybe, Jesus Christ doesn’t appreciate Falwell’s misusing His Name.
Falwell doesn’t care about some fictional character.
Well, he can’t care about anything, since he no longer exists. 
Megyn Kelly has been hitting that one hard, today. Ironically, as it turns out, apparently Kelly’s own father went by “Dr.” despite having no M.D. degree–‘merely’ an education doctorate (like Biden).
Kelly’s history of calling non-M.D. Seb Gorka “Dr.” has also been noted:
